ALEJANDRO SANZ-- "Paraiso Express" (Rating 4/5)

Alejandro Sanz will always make me smile because of his performance with Shakira in the video for "La Tortura". Unfortunately, I will have to mention that prior to that (or after for that matter), I didn't really pay attention to him. The only reason why this album got on my radar is because my Babyboi presented to me the lead single "Looking for Paradise" featuring Alicia Keys. I found it to be very good and it piqued my interest to check it out.

Controversy can arise in almost ANYONE's life...not just celebrities. SANZ's association with "Farruquito", the flamenco dancer found guilty of manslaughter after having killed a pedestrian while driving without a license, proved to be very disheartening, especially after the dancer had been part of one of SANZ's concerts. Not to mention the alleged Liechtenstein tax haven case where "SANZ...evaded up to 420,000 euros...within the 2002 fiscal year." None of that matters...nor could it really diminish the credentials SANZ has accumulated in the several years of his career. He has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, released eleven albums (as of today), and he is the recipient of fifteen Latin Grammy Awards and two Grammy Awards.

With the release of his eighth studio album "Paraiso Express", SANZ looks to create a "softer" album than anything he has released previously. It took me awhile to be able to find a preview of this album and I must say it really was worth the trouble. The rock ballads are plentiful and all contain beautiful words that have greater meaning only when SANZ performs them. Songs like "Hice Llorar Hasta a Los Angeles" and "Tu No Tienes La Culpa" really grab your attention with all the emotion within them. The pinnacle performances on the album come with tracks like "Mala" and "Nuestro Amor Sera Leyenda", both of which captivate my heart in ways most songs don't...really deep material. On some songs, it does seem like SANZ is taking several lines in one breath, leaving him gasping for air and travelling off key...but I think that only adds to the intensity of most of the tracks on here. Really, there is nothing for me to complain about...this is a really enjoyable album.

Songs that I Really Enjoyed from the Album:
• Hice Llorar Hasta a Los Angeles
• Sin Que Se Note
• Tu No Tienes La Culpa
• Looking For Paradise featuring Alicia Keys
