INFORMATION on PREVIOUS WEEK'S ALBUM PLACINGS on the BILLBOARD 200

WALE--"Attention Deficit"
DROPPED from #21 to #100

BRITNEY SPEARS-- "The Singles Collection"
DROPPED from #22 to #79

MELANIE FIONA-- "The Bridge"
DROPPED from #57 to #75

ALEJANDRO SANZ-- "Paraiso Express"
DROPPED from #84 to being non-existent on the Billboard 200

JENCARLOS-- "Buscame"
DROPPED from #91 to being non-existent on the Billboard 200

VICTOR MANUELLE-- "Yo Mismo"
DROPPED from #110 to being non-existent on the Billboard 200

This week's chart analysis was beyond exhausting...yet, very interesting. 50 CENT...I'm not gonna waste my time on this fool...! I'll just say this...I already knew this before the album was dropped and my Babyboi only confirmed it. The figure that was in the hundred-thousand range for how many albums he sold was based upon TWO weeks of sales. Because of the album leaking on the Internet, 50 CENT made "Before I Self Destruct" available for digital download...so his ACTUAL FIRST WEEK sales are NOT over 100,000! Don't let the numbers take you for a ride...do some research first before believing 50 CENT actually has a fan base.

NORAH JONES and JOHN MAYER...more power to them. I really didn't see the big deal behind "Battle Studies" and I sure as Hell wouldn't have called it a "Number One" album...

KRIS ALLEN and LEONA LEWIS seriously have to do something quickly to stay on people's minds because right now...no one really cares about them...trust me, the sales speak for themselves.

JUSTIN BIEBER did not need to have ALL seven songs from his album released for radio play. I think that's absolutely unfair and a bit of overkill.

ONE REPUBLIC is another band that needs to keep up with their work...while JANET...I called it...my Babyboi called it...no one was interested in a "greatest hits" compilation from her.

PRETTY RICKY...yeah, whatever.

Last week's artists who released albums either dropped tremendously down the chart...or they disappeared altogether from the Billboard 200. BRITNEY SPEARS and MELANIE FIONA drop into the seventies while WALE falls almost eighty spots down the chart to #100. None of the Latin artists are on the Billboard 200...BUT JENCARLOS beat out ALEJANDRO SANZ for the Number One spot on the Latin Albums chart. VICTOR MANUELLE is still holding it down for the Tropical Albums chart.
CHECK HERE LATER THIS WEEK on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3rd, 2009 to find out how ADAM LAMBERT, LADY GAGA, RIHANNA, SHAKIRA, JAY SEAN, and ANGIE STONE do on the charts!

(ALL INFORMATION on this page has been retrieved on Monday, November 30th, 2009 from ALL FACTS made AVAILABLE on BILLBOARD.COM...the lack of information on an ARTIST's release doesn't necessarily mean they are not on the charts. Full BILLBOARD INFORMATION can be accessed at billboard.biz)

BABYBOI SEZ (Volume 1.3)

MONICA (January 2010) Monica has struggled over the past few years with her musical identity. 2003’s ‘After the Storm’ was a critical and commercial success, charting four singles and gaining platinum status. The follow up, 06’s ‘The Makings of Me’ stands as Monica’s lowest selling album to date, failing to even go gold despite the release of four singles (all of which were ineffective on the charts during their releases from summer 06 to summer 07). Three years later, Monica is set to return to her roots. Moving past the hip-hop influences of her last album, and focusing on the R&B sound that got her noticed in the first place. Dozens of songs have been recorded for the new album titled ‘Still Standing’. The list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of the music industry, featuring Johnta Austin, Brian Michael Cox, Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo, Polow da Don, Jazze Pha, Stargate, Babyface, R. Kelly, Ester Dean, Lil Jon, T-Pain, and Missy Elliott. The album’s title track leaked over the summer and gained some radio play in markets like Atlanta. That song, which features Ludacris, will not be the lead single however. Working with a myriad group of artists in search of that perfect sound has forced Still Standing to be pushed back several times. Originally expected in October, the album was then moved to December 8th only to be rescheduled to January 2010 to coincide with the finale of the reality show Monica is filming to promote this CD. Taking a page from the Keyshia Cole playbook, Monica’s show (also titled Still Standing) is currently documenting her struggle to return to the charts. This whole reality show to support an album idea must be working as The Queen herself, Mary J. Blige has just inked a deal with BET to produce a show which follows the creation of her new album as well. Monica will have much to compete with when her new music is finally released, but as long as she stays true to herself and (most important her fans), she will have no trouble regaining past fame and success.

Photobucket

BRANDY (Summer 2010) It almost seems like a crime to mention Monica and then not mention the person who brought Mo her biggest hit to date with ‘The Boy Is Mine’. For those of you wondering where Brandy has been the past few years, you need only take a closer look at the credits of some major albums to see her many guest verses and songwriting contributions. Recently Brandy’s been featured on hit albums from John Legend, Ginuwine, and Timbaland. After the unsuccessful promotion of her last album, 2008’s ‘Human’, Brandy parted ways with label Epic and is currently shopping a new deal. Word on the street is that Def Jam is interested in signing B and releasing her new album. Said album is almost done and features production from The-Dream and Tricky as well as Ne-Yo and Stargate. No word one whether long time collaborators Timbaland and Darkchild plan to contribute, but their input wouldn’t be surprising. Brandy is also hard at work on a duet album with brother Ray J, tentatively titled ‘R&B’ which should be expected at the end of next year. That album, as the title implies, will feature heavy use of R&B melodies and well as the great harmonies of this brother-sister duo. Also look for Brandy’s rap debut (under the name Bran’Nu) on Timbaland’s Shock Value sequel out in December.

Photobucket

JAMIE FOXX (Spring 2010) Topping the biggest hit of your career is difficult for any artist, yet for Jamie Foxx he seems to welcome the challenge. 2010 will bring the release of his latest work rumored to be titled ‘Foxx’. Inspired by his work with T-Pain on ‘Blame It’, Jamie set out to work with artists he had no prior experience with on this album. First on that list was Justin Timberlake. Timberlake and Foxx came up with three songs for Jaime’s new project, one of which features them duetting together. Jaime also booked studio time with up and coming hit-maker Jack Splash (more on him below) in an effort to switch up his sound. Also providing sounds on this album will be Kanye West and Timbaland who’ve worked with Jamie closely on both his previous releases to great success. The lead single for the album is expected to be “Speak French” which features a guest verse from rap’s new go-to guy Gucci Mane. Look for Jamie to bring us some classic R&B (with a twist) when his new album is released early next year.

Photobucket

JACK SPLASH (Spring 2010) The idea that a behind the scenes hit-maker can cross into the mainstream public eye is not a new one; dating back to Diddy in the early 90’s and more recently Kanye West, Ne-Yo, and Keri Hilson. Those with immense talent can rarely stay behind the scenes. Whether your gift be songwriting, production, or background singing, with a little luck (and some industry friends) one can make it big. And with that said, the biggest most highly anticipated album of 2010 comes from producer/singer/songwriter Jack Splash. You may not know his name, but his music is everywhere. Jack gained fame after working with Cee-Lo Green (of Gnarles Barkley) several years ago. That work lead to Jack being offered a deal to produce music for Alicia Keys on her ‘As I Am’ album. Jack’s contribution, “Teenage Love Affair” was chosen as a single and landed Keys another Top 10 radio hit. Since then the list of artists who were eager to work with Jack grew immensely. He’s currently garnered studio time with John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, T-Pain, Estelle, Jamie Foxx, Missy Elliott, Jazmine Sullivan, Shakira, Raheem DeVaughn, Anthony Hamilton, Britney Spears, Clare Maguire, and Solange Knowles. Jack’s work with Jennifer Hudson, “All Dressed Up In Love” became the theme song for the popular “Sex and the City Movie”. And on her debut album, Jack co-produced and co-wrote “I’m His Only Woman” the Jennifer Hudson/Fantasia duet that went on to win a Grammy. Classifying Jack’s debut is far from easy. With a mix of Soul, Funk, Rock, Pop, and Electronica, the best definition would be to say it’s eclectic. How can something sound both old school and modern at the same time? Ask Jack. Late this past summer an unfinished track was leaked in Miami and gained heavy rotation in most of that city’s fickle clubs. This forced Jack back into the studio to properly finish the song and redistribute it as a way to build buzz for his debut. That track eventually became “I Could Have Loved You” and now features Missy Elliott and Jazmine Sullivan. Other big names lined up for the album entitled “Technology and Love Might Save Us All”, include R. Kelly and T-Pain who duet on “Ringtone” and Lupe Fiasco who’s featured on possible single “Flashback”. Also look for appearances by Kelis and Cee-Lo himself when this hot album drops in the spring.

IVY QUEEN (Spring 2010) Being in the industry for over ten years and preparing to release your seventh album is quite the accomplishment--even more so when your genre of music generally shuns artists of your gender. Yet Ivy Queen’s immense talent knows no bounds. Her last album 2007’s ‘Sentimiento’ was her highest charting yet and Top 10 single “Que Lloren” spent months on the charts in several countries. Ivy’s known for pushing her sound and reggaetón in general, into new directions. Using unique melodies and percussion with heartfelt and raw lyrics, Ivy has rightfully earned her status as Queen. 2010 will bring us her latest labor of love titled ‘Drama Queen’. The most surprising announcement of all regarding this album is the news that Ivy recently recorded a song with Beyoncé that will be featured on Drama Queen. This alone states the caliber of music this album will contain. With new management backing her, Ivy looks to expand into the U.S. ala Daddy Yankee six years ago. Given her talent, that should be an easy task; the hard part will be balancing her music so as not to alienate her loyal fan base. Other artists expected to appear on this album include Cosculluela and Zion. Ivy’s camp is keeping the production credits a closely guarded secret for now. But given the inclusion of American recording artist Beyoncé, might Ivy be using some American producers too? It’s too soon to say, but loyal fans are curious if the Luny Tunes will be producing some new tracks for Ivy, since their past collabos have been so successful. Regardless, look for Drama Queen to usher in a new era of reggaetón when it debuts at the beginning of next year!

NELLY (March 2010) Staying out of the limelight for several years can be quite hazardous to your career, especially if you’re a hip-hop artist. Just ask Nelly, whose last album ‘Brass Knuckles’ was his first after an almost 5 year hiatus. The hip-hop world is constantly moving and other artists out there are hungry for their piece of fame and success. While Nelly was away the game shifted and as a result, his return to the music world was quite unsuccessful. But that was then, and Nelly is ready to give it another try once more with a new album that is guaranteed to put him back on top. Production by The Neptunes and Polow da Don is expected, as are guest appearances from Usher, Diddy, Akon, Sean Paul, and Janet Jackson. Also expected to make a return on this album is Nelly’s group the St. Lunatics. The first official single from the new album is due in January. Can Nelly return to the multiplatinum success he’s had during the beginning of the decade? We’ll see, but it should be noted that Brass Knuckles was a fine album, one of Nelly’s best perhaps. The problem was its lack of promotion and the subsequent lack of interest from hip-hop fans. Here’s hoping Universal gets behind this record and gives it the proper push it deserves!

ADAM LAMBERT-- "For Your Entertainment" (Rating 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(One of this week's "Featured Artist")

One of the BEST ALBUMS of this year is from American Idol's eighth season "runner-up". With an album as powerful as his debut, I wonder why the general public didn't vote more for him during last season. You can tell that LAMBERT was influenced by legendary artists like Queen, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, and David Bowie...it's so easy to recognize it in his style of singing and musical choices. LAMBERT, raised in San Diego, was heavily active in his high school's arts department...whether it was in musicals or the choir. Then, of course, he had his stint on American Idol...if it wasn't for ALL of these moments and experiences in his life, LAMBERT wouldn't be here to grace us with his presence...

...and I am so happy he is. "For Your Entertainment" is an album unlike any other. From production to lyrics, this album is a joyride that catapults the listener to heights that no one else has been able to do so this year. Sure...other artists have tried...but this guy's voice is impeccably grand and enough to stop you dead in your tracks...and I can't get enough of it. The album features several hit-makers, including Pink, Lady Gaga, Max Martin, Linda Perry, Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly, Kara DioGuardi, and more, putting together an irresistible and forceful blend of Pop and Rock. LAMBERT takes control of some of the writing of the album as well. He has the ability to command the song and make it his own...a final result that can't be duplicated by NO ONE else. There are moments on the album that are very teasing and persuasively flirtatious ("Strut", "For Your Entertainment", and "Fever") ...but what had me at the edge of my seat were two songs in particular. The first being "Soaked". Written by Brian Bellamy of MUSE, "Soaked" starts off intense with a very profound Mediterranean-inspired orchestral arrangement infused with heavy guitars and Rock elements...then it dies down into a very solemn ballad...only to be led into a penetrating vocal performance by LAMBERT that features a score similar to the introduction itself. Very much like Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", I had to pay tribute to this song...absolutely bone-chilling and a definite eclectic musical rollercoaster. The other song is "Sleepwalker" ...on this song, (wow...I just want to thank this guy for being so gifted), LAMBERT's voice soars over a very seductive Rock melody depicting the aftermath of a broken relationship...and the guitar solo towards the middle is orgasmic in its own right!

DAMN...okay, let me compose myself...! ADAM LAMBERT is someone that is set to become a legend...if he keeps it up. "For Your Entertainment" made him one of this week's "featured artists" in my eyes because it's an album that had me picking up my jaw several times during my listening of it. Definitely a must-have!

LADY GAGA-- "The Fame Monster" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

LADY GAGA is so damn infectious...it really is difficult to detach one's self from her hypnotizing eccentricities. Her style is curiously sexy and her music possesses a magnetic field that sucks you in as a whole, fighting with you if you even dare to ignore it. LADY GAGA achieved her "..."Fame" with a debut album that has so far sold four million copies worldwide. She also holds the record for most singles from a debut album to consecutively reach the top of the Pop charts...so what's next on her agenda? Well...a groundbreaking world tour...and a re-release of her debut album that is on almost everyone's wishlist.

So that we're ALL clear... "The Fame Monster" will be released in THREE different formats. The "Standard Edition" will be an extended play album only featuring the EIGHT new songs. The "Deluxe Edition" will feature the new material ALONG with her original debut album "The Fame" ...and the "Super Deluxe Fame Monster Pack" is a box set that features several interesting elements including a lock of LADY GAGA's hair. If you ask me, the new material on "...Monster" is electrifying. She teams up again with RedOne on the lead single "Bad Romance" and a couple of other songs. As if she needed to do it again, LADY GAGA collaborated with Beyonce on the song "Telephone" ...a less dirty version compared to the extended mix of "Video Phone". The actual standout tracks for me are the Teddy Riley-produced track "Teeth" (You know...Teddy Riley...from BLACKStreet... "No Diggity, no doubt, uh!" Yeah, him...) and "Dance in the Dark" ...which has an element that sounds really close to George Michael's "Careless Whisper" introduction.

There's no question in my mind that LADY GAGA will have a LONG career ahead of her. And she did the right thing...she released a "re-release" that contains more than two songs! (Take a mental note, Beyonce...that's why I'm not reviewing YOUR twentieth re-release today!) I'm already anticipating what her sophomore album will sound like if "The Fame Monster" is any indication what direction she's headed in.

Songs that I Absolutely Enjoyed from the Album:
• Bad Romance
• Alejandro
• Monster
• Speechless
• Telephone featuring Beyonce
• So Happy I Could Die

RIHANNA-- "Rated R" (Rating 5/5)

(One of this week's "Featured Artists")

Before I go into this review, I have to make some revelatory statements about Chris Brown and RIHANNA. I have long been a fan of hers since the beginning. C.B., not so much...while there were some songs I liked, it was never enough for me to become a die-hard fan of his...really, the only thing that appealed to me was his dance moves that are now being copied by many others. I write these reviews to the best of my ability based on several things. In the case of RIHANNA and Chris Brown, I have to somehow eliminate what happened between them from my mind in order to properly write an effective review on their music...for the most part, at least. If it turns out by the time C.B.'s album "Graffiti" comes out that I gave RIHANNA the better review...it's not favoritism. It's all based on facts...there is a reason why she got the highest rating I give...and why she is another "featured artist" for this week.

No, she's not a "dyke". No, she's not suicidal. Is your Chris Brown a "faggot"? Is he a woman-beater? It's up to you to answer these questions on your own terms...but to highly criticize an artist in the worse way for switching up their style is beyond unethical. "Rated R" fits perfectly as the title of this unbelievable album. RIHANNA co-wrote nine of the thirteen tracks...and they feature some of the most provocative and intense lyrics EVER found on any of her albums. As a matter of fact, "Rated R" will be the first album in her career that receives a Parental Advisory Warning because of its explicit material. And you know what...I applaud it. Given everything that has happened, do you honestly think RIHANNA was gonna resort to recording "cutesy" music like "Umbrella"? You're an ignorant fool if you believed she would. "Rated R" is darker, more aggressive, sexual, and a departure from the "little girl" we once knew...

If you call yourself a true fan of RIHANNA's, maybe you were able to pick up on something that I did. "Rated R" is a continuation from where the album "Good Girl Gone Bad" ended. Remember this line... "...Once a good girl goes bad...we're gone forever" ...one can only assume that RIHANNA was ALREADY expressing her anger towards the situation she was in...she's just more willing to express it fully at this point in her life...but I bet you didn't think of that did you? And you call yourself a fan...please!

"Rated R" starts off with a slightly scary introduction entitled "Mad House" before entering the heavy bass-thumping sounds of "Wait Your Turn (The Wait is Ova)". This album isn't filled with pop-like sounds and airy material. It is heavy...and it is raw. For those who talk all that garbage about RIHANNA having lost her Caribbean roots...are you tone -deaf? Listen to "Wait Your Turn" one more time and tell me that you don't hear her patois coming through...she isn't faking a Barbadian accent, you know. The album proceeds through very deep ballads like "Stupid In Love", "Cold Case Love", and the haunting lead single "Russian Roulette". There are some sexier moments found on tracks like "Rude Boy". But honestly, as a whole, this album does not disappoint. One of my favorite tracks on the album has to be "Te Amo" ...it really does have the sweetest of the melodies out of the whole entire tracklist....and people like Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake, The-DREAM, and more contributed their expertise at making "Rated R" a remarkable masterpiece.

I may not know what's gonna happen next with RIHANNA's career...because of the ignorance of people, it seems like no one is really accepting of her change in music. All I have to say is this...a true artist knows the definition of evolution. Whatever the driving force, RIHANNA has captured said evolution in "Rated R". I'm very proud of her...and I know she's yet another artist that is here to stay around for a very long time.

SO GET USED TO IT!

SHAKIRA-- "She Wolf" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

Yet another artist that so many people are hating on right now. SHAKIRA has shed many layers musically in her career...but she still remains the same humble and intelligent young lady she's always been. She continues to draw from her Spanish and Lebanese roots to give us some of the most exotic songs we've ever heard here in America. The moment she decided to cross over into mainstream radio, SHAKIRA's native country of Colombia seemingly turned their backs on her calling her a "sell-out" and such. If that was the case, I don't think SHAKIRA would ever make reference to where she's from...or go out of the way to open a six-million dollar school in her hometown of Barranquilla.

She has brought us loads of hits like "Ojos Asi", "Donde Estas Corazon?", "Whenever. Wherever", and "Hips Don't Lie". She has sold more than fifty million albums worldwide making her the fourth wealthiest female recording artist (according to Forbes Magazine). She also holds the record for the song that was played MOST in one week according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems in American Radio History ("Hips Don't Lie"; 9,637 times). And who can forget how she moves on stage and in her music videos?

Yes...SHAKIRA isn't some new artist that has to battle for the likes of anyone...she's confident, gifted...and legendary in her own right. "She Wolf" has already sold 1.5 million copies worldwide after it was released elsewhere last month. At the last minute, the album was pushed back to November 23rd after it was announced that the tracklist would undergo a facelift. The tracks "Did It Again" and "Give it Up to Me" are noticeably different (for those that followed the information on this album from when its release was first made mention). The former now features an added rap verse from Kid Cudi. "Give it Up To Me" was originally supposed to be featured on Timbaland's upcoming "Shock Value II" with vocals from Flo Rida and Timbaland himself. Instead, Lil' Wayne was added to the final product and the song became part of "She Wolf" as the second official single from the album.

The album features a lot of work reportedly done by The Neptunes. At first, I was a little skeptical about that...but after listening to the CD, I fell in love with it...I think they really embodied her style while adding a modern Hip-Hop and Pop element to it. SHAKIRA's vocals are always mesmerizing and they flow perfectly over the intricate drum rhythms of the Middle East, as well as the flare from the Spanish melodies also included. Three Spanish-language tracks appear and are the alternatives to "She Wolf", "Did It Again" featuring Kid Cudi, and "Why Wait". (THOSE songs are named "Loba", "Lo Hecho Esta Hecho", and "Años Luz", respectively). "Long Time" features a classic Reggae beat to it...but the stronger points come on the up-tempo ballads "Men In This Town" and "Gypsy". SHAKIRA collaborates, once again, with Wyclef Jean on the danceable and coquettish track entitled "Spy".

SHAKIRA will be releasing a full-length Spanish album sometime next year...and she will also embark on a world concert tour as well. But for the moment, take "She Wolf" for what it is...an album with plenty of club songs and awesome melodies grouped together with SHAKIRA's seductive vocals...

And nowhere in the description of this album do I mention her being a "sell-out" ...so quit bitching and enjoy the music because you know DAMN well you'll be the first one at the club acting a fool when one of her songs comes on.

Songs that I Really Enjoyed from the Album:
• She Wolf/Loba
• Did It Again featuring Kid Cudi/Lo Hecho Esta Hecho (Spanish version does NOT include verse with Kid Cudi)

JAY SEAN-- "All or Nothing" (Rating 2/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

I am absolutely disappointed with this album. And I bet you any money all of you who are gonna buy this album don't even know anything about JAY SEAN's background....well, allow me to educate you.

His REAL NAME is Kamaljit Singh Jhooti and he is of British and Indian descent...his parents are Punjabi Sikh immigrants to be exact. Throughout the years, JAY SEAN has established himself as a singer-songwriter, rapper, beatboxer, and record producer. Prior to the release of his American debut, JAY SEAN has sold plenty of albums in India and the U.K. with his first two albums. What makes these albums so special to me is the inclusion of Bhangra beats and Indian instruments alongside the classic R&B/Pop elements. JAY SEAN's been featured on Bollywood films and has even recorded songs in his mother language.

What bothers me the MOST about "All or Nothing" is simply the reality that he didn't include NONE of that...making it seem as if he forgot about where his family came from. (Wow...is that what you call a sell-out?) JAY SEAN's second album is better than "All or Nothing" ...a record produced almost entirely by him, Bobbybass, and Alan Sampson. If one felt his singles were almost identical in nature...listen to the entire album where every track is like the one before. There is no variety...and the "Hood Pop" beats are already beginning to be annoying every time they're heard. ("Hood Pop" is a term I just coined to help describe the masqueraded Pop beat behind a wanna-be thuggish hip-hop bassline...for example, JAY SEAN's "Down" and "Do You Remember" describe perfectly what I'm talking about.)

After hearing JAY SEAN's earlier music, I really believe he is a talented person. To compare him to the likes of Ne-Yo may be a little extreme (thanks Babyboi for that random note) ...but he does have something. He is signed to Cash Money Records...and for what? To be watered down by a bunch of label mates that need to stop making appearances every chance they get? (Here's to you Lil' Wayne!) JAY SEAN would've impressed me more if he would've at least included ONE track that symbolizes his ethnicity and heritage. He is the definition of "becoming commercialized" ...and the only reason why "All of Nothing" received a "2/5" rating from me is because of his vocals. If it wasn't for that...I promise you, he would've been named "The Failure".

Songs that I Mildly Enjoyed from the Album:
• Do You
• Cry
• All Or Nothing

ANGIE STONE-- "Unexpected" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(One of this week's "Featured Artists")

ANGIE STONE knows Neo-Soul like no one else. She's come a long way from when her career started in the early 1980s. She now returns with this absolutely relaxing album that came about very "Unexpected".

Out of any of the other albums released today, this is the one that makes you feel warm and good inside. ANGIE STONE takes you on a trip through various stories throughout the album...as always, making you reflect if you listen very closely to the lyrics. "Maybe" is one of my personal favorites as she talks about not wanting to hear the word "maybe" when it comes to the direction of the relationship she's in. Most people want to give "words of uncertainty" (as I call them) instead of just being upfront about how they feel...and that can tend to be really irritating. "I Don't Care" is an anthem and dedication to the haters in ANGIE STONE's life. I definitely relate to it right now in my life...trust me, there's a large amount of people that are just waiting to get satisfaction out of seeing me fail...and I just can't let them have it. There are some sweeter moments on the album and those are present on the sexy "Kiss All Over Your Body" and the heartfelt "I Found a Keeper".

Despite all these other albums released today that have SO much going on production-wise, "Unexpected" is definitely a chill album...something that I would listen to while I drove through the South and East Sides of the Chi. (Good thing I no longer have a car...!) I highly recommend that you listen to ANGIE STONE...she really does feed the soul with her music.

Songs that I Really Enjoyed from the Album:
• I Ain't Hearin' You
• Free
• Hey Mr. DJ
• Why Is It
• Tell Me
• Think Sometimes
• I Found a Keeper

BOYZ II MEN-- "Love" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

This outstanding R&B group returns with another album filled with covers from some of the most influential songs of the past few decades. BOYZ II MEN shows us that, despite losing a long time member to the group (Michael McCary), they still go on strong recording some amazing music.

"Love" features music originally done by Bonnie Raitt, Lonestar, Goo Goo Dolls, The Spinners, and more...with a spin that only BOYZ II MEN can put on it. My Babyboi is right on point when it comes to this group's ability to harmonize flawlessly. On "Can't Make You Love Me" (one my personal favorite songs of ALL time), the group's rendition is somewhat more uplifting. (Remember that the original track was very melancholy.) I've also already admitted that I enjoyed their version of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time", which normally would've made me cringe upon hearing the first note of the introduction. Other favorites of mine include "Iris" and "When I Fall In Love" featuring Michael Bublé.

What I would really like to hear is a full-length album from these guys. BOYZ II MEN's music really does have some strong memories for me...and I would to continue to make more with their style and music.

Songs that I Really Enjoyed from the Album:
• If You Leave Me Now (Originally performed by Chicago)
• Misty Blue (Originally performed by Bob Montgomery)
• Time After Time (Originally performed by Cyndi Lauper)
• Iris (Originally performed by Goo Goo Dolls)
• Cupid (Originally performed by Sam Cooke)

LEONA LEWIS-- "ECHO" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(One of this week's "Featured Artists")

I am absolutely in love with this album! LEONA LEWIS earned great feedback with her debut album "Spirit" which contained the singles "Bleeding Love" and "Better In Time". On her sophomore album "ECHO", LEWIS returns with "racier" material and dance-floor rhythms...there still is a considerable amount of ballads on the album...but they aren't as dusty and stale as some of the music produced for her first album.

First off, can I just say that Ryan Tedder needs to stop using the same drum machine rhythm in every song he produces? I mean, damn...how unoriginal can you be? For those who know what I'm talking about, you will hear the same similar beat that you hear in Beyonce's "Halo" and Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone" in songs like "Happy" and "You Don't Care" ...it's really played-out and annoying. Other than that, LEWIS' voice has been pushed slightly to different barriers that weren't heard on the last album. Her vocals on the song "Can't Breathe" are so captivating...they have the power to make your heart skip a beat. One of the standout tracks for me was the Max Martin-produced "Outta My Head". Again, he produces better music for anyone else other than Britney! The song kind of reminds me of something Cascada would've performed prior to their latest release "Evacuate the Dancefloor".

Unfortunately, no one seems to be too interested in LEONA LEWIS at the moment. The lead single "Happy" has not done stellar here in the States and it leaves me wondering if anything can be done to bring her new album out into the spotlight. She really does deserve to be acknowledged for this album. LEWIS became one of this week's "featured artists" because there is an evident new sound in her material. "ECHO" really does bring out the raw talent this young lady possesses...without having her sing music that caters to an audience of elderly people.

ONEREPUBLIC-- "Waking Up" (Rating 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(One of this week's "Featured Artists")

This album is a perfect example of how creative Ryan Tedder can be...with his OWN MUSIC. Is it that hard to work at creating a different sound for the artists he's currently in the studio with...? I don't think so. Hmmm...I smell fakeness...but anyways, I digress. ONEREPUBLIC's sophomore album is much better than the last...I enjoyed it immensely.

On "Waking Up", the band decided to take a more "alternative" and "meaningful" direction with their material. And that is very evident...the sound is a lot more involved and deep compared to their debut. One surprise...and I love it when artists do this...comes on the song "Missing Persons 1 & 2". The song starts off one way only to end up being switched around in the second half...kind of like what Aaliyah did with "Choosey Lover (Old School/New School)" on her 1996 album "One in a Million". (Only my true music fans know what I mean...!) Very close to the style of Coldplay's music. "Waking Up" has some real strong moments...especially on tracks like "Fear" and the title track. The track "Marching On" will also be featured on Timbaland's "Shock Value II" out December 8th. The deluxe version of the album features four additional tracks that are just sensational, including the somber "It's a Shame". I definitely recommend this album to anyone. Now, if only Tedder can share some of his expertise with other artists...today's music would be perfect...

He really shouldn't be stingy...!

Songs that I Truly Enjoyed from the Album:
• Made For You
• All the Right Moves

PRETTY RICKY's SELF-TITLED Fourth STUDIO ALBUM (Rating 3/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

Even after having to replace members in the group, PRETTY RICKY continues to bring the same raunchy sex music one can expect from them. But something must've changed in me...for the first time EVER, PRETTY RICKY's music doesn't turn me on...well, the music itself, yeah...but not the lyrics. As a matter of fact, I felt dirty after previewing this album...almost violated. Could it be that my relationship has completely changed my ways...? WOW! (I love you babe...)

Diamond "Baby Blue" Smith, Spectacular Smith, and Corey "Slick 'em" Mathis (all brothers) started PRETTY RICKY with Marcus "Pleasure P" Cooper in 1997. Several years later, Pleasure P would be replaced by Christopher "Ambition/4Play" Myers upon him wanting to embark on a solo career. Upon the release of PRETTY RICKY's eponymous fourth studio album, Ambition/4 Play has been replaced by Mexican-American "Lingerie". One thing that has always taken me by surprise about this group IS the vocal harmonies and rap performances by the members. With songs like "Grind On Me" and "Love Like Honey", I truly enjoyed hearing the songs take on different levels of excitement as each individual of PRETTY RICKY took their turn at the mic. On this album, however, whether it's be because of personal preference, I don't hear that anymore. Don't get me wrong...the album is still decent...but it's not appealing to me. The lyrics are just WAY too explicit...and they don't do anything but turn me off. There are some interesting moments...especially on the aptly-named track "Me and My Guitar (Ménage a Trois)"...I've always been a sucker for guitar-driven melodies and this song has it. Still with that, the album takes on some rather hilarious situations...and those are present on the track "Discovery Channel (Wild Girl)", which reminds me too much of R. Kelly's "The Zoo" with all the random animal mating noises in the background! The one track I feel that was intriguing to me was "Black"...we all know what happens when there is nothing but darkness around you and you're alone with the person you love...or in many people's cases...the one you are about to have a one-night stand with. As a matter of fact, listen to songs like "Mr. Goodbar", which has officially left me NOT wanting the candy bar after PRETTY RICKY states that they "taste like Mr. Goodbar"...or the song "Like My Style (doggystyle)", which speaks for itself.

PRETTY RICKY...this album is alright as far as their career goes...but it's not enough for me to want to rush out and buy it. I really truly believe that at some point...raunchy, explicit sex songs won't do anything for people...especially those that are truly in love with someone else. Let this album solely be the soundtrack to a hot, sweaty mess of a one-night-stand in a dirty motel room.

Songs that I Somewhat Enjoyed from the Album:
• Say a Command
• Tipsy (In Dis Club)
• Me and My Guitar (Ménage a Trois)
• Black
• Discovery Channel (Wild Girl)
• Prince Charming
• Downtown

INFORMATION on PREVIOUS WEEK'S ALBUM PLACINGS on the BILLBOARD 200

GLEE-- "The Music, Volume One"
DROPPED from #4 to #9

AMERIE-- "In Love & War"
DROPPED from #46 to #111

RYAN LESLIE-- "Transition"
DROPPED from #50 to #117

Okay...first BRITNEY SPEARS. Whoever thought she would debut in the Top Ten with her compilation album was mistaken. I remember making a comment a few months ago when Madonna released "Celebration" that it would be difficult for BRITNEY and Janet to place high with their material. Let's see how Janet does next week. BRITNEY's "3" remains in the Top Ten...which is good...but I'm ready for a new studio album...and here's hoping it'll be worth the wait.

MELANIE FIONA and WALE...FIONA had already broken onto the Billboard 200 once before...#57 is the highest she's peaked thus far. WALE...man, it's amazing how none of his singles are placing high on the charts...but he had the highest debut on the 200...that's interesting.

ALEJANDRO SANZ had the highest debut out of his other two contenders VICTOR MANUELLE and JENCARLOS. MANUELLE debuts at the top of the Tropical Albums chart, while JENCARLOS rests right underneath SANZ on the Latin Albums and Latin Pop Albums charts. The thing is...both MANUELLE and JENCARLOS have to do something to keep making their music known. It doesn't matter if you've been around for years or you have a recognizable role in a Spanish soap opera...if you're music isn't out there...you will be forgotten.

GLEE's soundtrack album stays in the Top Ten...but AMERIE and RYAN LESLIE both fall over sixty spots down the charts...I'm pretty certain their presence on the Billboard 200 will be absent with two week's time.

CHECK HERE NEXT WEEK on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26th, 2009 to find out how JANET JACKSON, 50 CENT, NORAH JONES, JOHN MAYER, KRIS ALLEN, JUSTIN BIEBER, LEONA LEWIS, ONEREPUBLIC, BOYZ II MEN, and PRETTY RICKY do on the charts!

NORAH JONES-- "The Fall" (Rating 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(One of this week's "Featured Artists")

NORAH JONES has had stellar success as a female jazz artist having sold more than 36 million albums worldwide. Her inimitable style of Blues intermixed with soul, folk, and country elements have scored her several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year ("Come Away With Me") and Best New Artist. On her new project, JONES somewhat abandons her formula for a new sound that is similar to what a crossbreed between Dido and Portishead would sound like.

"The Fall" surprised me and is definitely an album that I like. Ryan Adams, Jacquire King, Will Sheff, and Jesse Harris are a few of the people who contributed their work on this album. I love music that's mellow and at the same time mysterious. JONES brings that perfectly on songs like "Even Though", "I Wouldn't Need You", and "You've Ruined Me". As always, her vocal ability shines through very noticeably strong. "Back to Manhattan" I relate to almost a little too much...I've been in that situation before where I had to return to NYC and pretend like "nothing ever happened"...if it hadn't been for my Babyboi, I probably wouldn't have had a great time upon my return trip. That's why the song "Man of the Hour" speaks out to me...he really is what the theme of this song is about. ..and not just the "Hour"...but the rest of my life.

Awesome album...and I highly recommend it to anyone.

JOHN MAYER-- "Battle Studies" (Rating 3/5)

JOHN MAYER returns with his fourth studio album entitled "Battle Studies". Earlier in the decade, MAYER became the recipient of a few Grammy Awards himself after having won the award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance (2002's "Your Body Is a Wonderland") . On this album, however, he decided to take a different musical direction...and for the most part, it works.

Calling it an "experimental" album, MAYER recruited Taylor Swift, Pino Palladino, and Steve Jordan to collaborate with him on "Battle Studies". It's simply just average to me. Songs on the album either had the power to move me in somewhat of a way or put me right to sleep. The highlights for me came with the opening track to the album entitled "Heartbreak Warfare" and "Perfectly Lonely". I think that if you want something to relate to and bring your spirits up...listen to these songs. As far as the rest of the album goes, like I said...it's alright...and will definitely be an album for someone who is a fan of MAYER. Anyone else on the other hands...sorry, but MAYER didn't persuade me hard enough to want to leave my house to search for his album and buy it.

KRIS ALLEN'S SELF-TITLED Major Label DEBUT ALBUM (Rating 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(One of this week's "Featured Artists")

I definitely misjudged this album the first time I heard it. KRIS ALLEN (American Idol's eighth season winner) has come a long way in his music career. ALLEN's Jive Records debut is phenomenal in its own right...bringing his impressive voice to the forefront. He holds writing credits on nine of the twelve tracks on the album...in addition to having worked with professionals in the industry like Mike Elizondo and Chris Daughtry.

ALLEN has this appeal to him that is profound. The album itself can be compared to the music of Maroon 5 and Lifehouse. Lyrically, ALLEN's debut is deep and reflective. Tracks like "I Need to Know" and "Before We Come Undone" are a prime example of how thought-provoking his music can be...especially the latter which describes a race to figure out the outcome of a possibly doomed relationship. The album contains his remarkable remake of Kanye West's "Heartless"...a cover that was done so superbly it kind of makes me favor it a lot more than the original! It will be very interesting to see how ALLEN does against his contender Adam Lambert, who is releasing his debut album this coming Super Monday. Either way, ALLEN became one of this week's "Featured Artists" because of his uniqueness...and a voice so undeniably amazing...it'll make you forget about other less-than-worthy artists who have come and gone along the way.

Songs that I Thoroughly Enjoyed from the Album:
• Before We Come Undone

JUSTIN BIEBER-- "My World" (Rating 3/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

I'm not a twelve-year-old girl who develops crushes on little boys...so I'm really failing to see what the big hype is with JUSTIN BIEBER. Before anyone mistakes me for being a hater...keep in mind that I'm nine years his senior and there's nothing for me to hate about. His voice is okay...but I've heard better...and if I'm not mistaken, there's a hint of reverberation and alteration to his voice that doesn't exactly sound natural to me...at least with other people, it's not as noticeable.

BIEBER's debut album "My World" consists solely of seven tracks...half of which have already been released to radio. He is gaining awesome success...but stardom at a young age could potentially go to this little kid's head...and that's already evident on the track "Bigger". Lyrics like "I was a player when I was little, but I'm bigger...all the haters (I swear) they look so small from up here...". Really? See...does he even know the true definition of what a 'hater' is? That's not cute, son...and not appealing to someone who is mature enough to understand what life is about. The strongest points on this album that are bearable for me come on the tracks "Down to Earth" and "Love Me", the latter which samples "Love Fool" by the Cardigans. Other than that, I won't go out and buy this album. I'll leave it to the pre-pubescent generation out there. Yes...his voice is amazing for a fifteen year old...but he's fifteen. He hasn't properly gone through the changes of becoming a man...and what does that mean...? His voice will possibly not carry the same jaw-dropping falsetto that we hear now...so enjoy it while it lasts.

50 CENT-- "Before I Self Destruct" (Rating 2/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(This week's "FAILURE")

There comes a time in everyone's life where they have to grow up and move on to bigger and better things. However, at the age of 32, 50 CENT still hasn't figured that out yet...and instead, he decides to release music that no one is really interested in.

After having been pushed back since 2007, "Before I Self Destruct" completely lost its appeal. And why is that? Why is it that someone who sold over twenty million albums combined with his first two releases all of a sudden isn't worth anything? Well...maybe because he whines more than a bitch in heat. Before I get to the point where I really give my thoughts on this album, let me just reiterate the fact that it's been pushed back approximately ELEVEN times...and is now on the verge of having its fifth and sixth single released from it!

"Before I Self Destruct" is supposed to be a much more "darker" and "aggressive" album than anything else he's released...but to tell you the truth, 50 CENT's cowardice shines brightly on this new effort. It just really gets to me how he has nothing else better to do but to bash several other rappers out there, for instance, Game (formerly The Game) ("So Disrespectful"). I've always understood the concept of "gangsta" rap...may even secretly like it for MANY reasons...but talking shit and threatening someone over a beat is the equivalent of "false-flagging"...and it isn't intimidating whatsoever. I'm a firm believer that if you want talk bullshit, you better bring it. And all 50 CENT does is hide behind the music...'cause he know better than to try to get his ass stabbed and/or shot nine times like he has before.

The album is full of top-notch production from artists like Dr. Dre, Polow Da Don, Rockwilder, DJ Khalil, and more. Honestly, this is the reason why this album received a rating of "2/5". Songs like "Do You Think About Me" and "Strong Enough" take you way back with their old school sound...but the lyrical content will readily make you want to tune out 50 CENT's voice altogether. Added vocals from Eminem ("Psycho") create an overplayed sense of bravado from both artists. And no matter how much Ne-Yo can liven up any situation, "Baby By Me" is NOT one of 50's strongest singles.

If he is one of those individuals who wants to play the "I wasn't raised by my father so I have to act like an asshole" card, 50 CENT needs to grow up. In his memoir ("From Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens"), 50 CENT stated that "after [he] got shot nine times at close range and didn't die, [he] started to think that [he] must have a purpose in life". Well, prove it. Hyping up the murderous, dangerous life you lived (and may still currently be involved in...if your music is a testament to reality) doesn't inspire anyone unless they want to become "wanna-be thugs". And Lord know there is too much of that already out on the streets. If you're going to buy this album...it's strictly going to be because you're as ignorant as 50 CENT is and you have no life...or you're curious and will, in the end, be highly disappointed.

I rarely use the label "...FAILURE" when it comes to reviews...but 50 CENT is the prime example of that. This album is pure garbage, fake, and really is just a definition of what the word "pussy" has come to be known as. Seriously, 50 CENT ain't worth shit...and he never will.

Songs That I Found Somewhat Minutely Enjoyable From the Album:
• Then Days Went By
• So Disrespectful
• Crime Wave
• Baby By Me featuring Ne-Yo
• OK, You're Right
• Could've Been You featuring R. Kelly

REVIEWS to be POSTED TOMORROW, NOVEMBER 17th, 2009:
NORAH JONES-- "The Fall"
JOHN MAYER-- "Battle Studies"
KRIS ALLEN's self-titled debut album
JUSTIN BEIBER- "My World"
LEONA LEWIS-- "ECHO"
ONEREPUBLIC-- "Waking Up"
BOYZ II MEN-- "Love"
PRETTY RICKY self-titled fourth studio album

It's been a LONG TIME since I had to review this many albums for one date! NORAH JONES and JOHN MAYER both claimed to have taken a different direction with their music...will it work for them in the end? Then we have KRIS ALLEN...the American Idol winner...versus the adolescent talent JUSTIN BEIBER...what do they have to offer? LEONA LEWIS was another who decided to take a different direction with her music...leaving aside the ballad-driven melodies of her last album for a more pop/up-tempo sound...will she end up being forgotten altogether...especially since ONEREPUBLIC's new album is coming out? (Keep in mind Ryan Tedder from ONEREPUBLIC produced part of her album.) What does that leave us with...BOYZ II MEN and PRETTY RICKY. Two male R&B groups...one releasing a cover album...the other releasing new material...BOTH are not even mentioned anymore when it comes to the music industry. Are their respected albums going to be worth anything? Check back here TOMORROW for the answers to these questions and many more on the next blog I will be posting.

FROM the 1995 G.H. COMPILATION ALBUM "Design of a Decade: 1986/1996"
RELEASED on October 10th, 1995
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on ALBUM: #3 (Billboard 200); #4 (R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart)

"Runaway"
Produced and written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Released on August 29th, 1995
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #3 (Hot 100); #6 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart); #8 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart); #7 (Adult Contemporary Songs chart)

"Runaway" made JANET the first female artist in Billboard history to debut in the Top Ten on the Hot 100 chart. Much like "Escapade" and "When I Think of You", "Runaway" has that bubbly vibe to it. It contained a pop/hip-hop sound that incorporated African and Indian influences. This song will always make me smile.

"Design of a Decade..." really did capture all of JANET's hits since the release of "Control". The compilation became double-platinum and the lead single was certified Gold. The second single released from the album entitled "Twenty Foreplay" received moderate success in Europe...but was never commercially released here in the United States. I once remember hearing JANET speak about each album project she embarked on and how it reflected the mood she was currently in at that moment. Her next release proved to be the most darkest, controversial, and provocative one yet.

FROM the 1997 ALBUM "The Velvet Rope"
RELEASED on October 7th, 1997
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #1 (Billboard 200--10/25/1997); #2 (R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart--10/25/1997)

"Got 'Til It's Gone" featuring Q-Tip and Joni Mitchell
Produced and co-written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Also written by Rene Elizondo, Jr., Kamaal Ibn Fareed, and Joni Mitchell
Released on September 22nd, 1997
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #6 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart)

Once again, I'm surprised by some of the information I've learned by doing this review. I never knew that "Got 'Til It's Gone" wasn't the official lead single from the album. It was released commercially in other countries...but it only gained airplay here in the States. The song featured a rap verse by Q-Tip that would later be interpolated in rapper T.I.'s 2006 song "Why You Wanna". Nothing Q-Tip ever did was memorable...so it goes without saying that his being part of this song is forgettable to most. What is amazing and a stand-out is the sampling of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" that's featured (obviously) in the title and chorus to the song. Interesting fact: JANET was sued by pop/soul singer Des'ree who believed her single "Feel So High" was sampled on "Got 'Til It's Gone". So, now...Des'ree is credited as a co-writer to the single.

"Together Again"
Produced and co-written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Also written by Rene Elizondo, Jr.
Released on December 2nd, 1997
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #1 (Hot 100--01/31/1998); #8 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--01/03/1998); #5 (Pop Songs chart--03/14/1998); #1 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart--02/7/1998); #29 (Adult Pop Songs chart--06/27/1998)

THIS was the official single for "The Velvet Rope". "Together Again" (which was originally meant to be a ballad) is a dedication to JANET's friends who had passed from AIDS. It ended up becoming her most recognized international single after it hit the Top Ten and Top Five slots in several countries. Personally, I enjoy the "Deeper Remix" to this song. The smooth, moodier remake of "Together Again" proved to be more seductive and meaningful to me than the original version.

"I Get Lonely (TNT Remix)" featuring BLACKStreet
Produced and co-written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Also written by Rene Elizondo, Jr.
Released on February 24th, 1998
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #3 (Hot 100--05/23/1998); #1 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--05/23/1998); #10 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart); #29 (Adult Pop Songs chart--06/20/1998)

I have NEVER liked this remix that featured BLACKStreet...again, leaving me to say that I would pick the album version over how it was remade. JANET has never been the artist to have twenty guest appearances on an album like most people nowadays. These guys...although talented in their own right...really watered down the single for me. "I Get Lonely" was nominated in 1999 for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance...but ended up losing to Lauryn Hill.

"Go Deep"
Produced and co-written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Also written by Rene Elizondo, Jr.
Released on July 8th, 1998
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #1 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart--08/08/1998); #12 (Pop Songs chart--10/17/1998)

Definitely a party song...and one that reminds me of my 22nd birthday party (don't ask). "Go Deep" rightfully deserved to have gotten to the top of the Dance/Club Play Songs chart. The song was originally supposed to have been performed at the 1998 VH1 Fashion Awards...but instead JANET opted with "What About" (a song I almost performed in seventh grade).

"What's It Gonna Be?!" featuring Busta Rhymes (NOT featured on "The Velvet Rope" album)
Produced and co-written by Darrell "Delite" Allamby
Originally on BUSTA RHYMES' 1999 album "Extinction Event Level"
Also written by T. Smith and A. Roberson
Released on March 9th, 1999
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #3 (Hot 100--04/17/1999); #1 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--04/03/1999); #40 (Pop Songs chart--06/05/1999)

This song has the ability to make anyone wet...I'm sorry...I just had to put that out there. I remember being in awe watching this music video. To be honest with you, JANET and Busta Rhymes collaborating together was one of the hottest things ever done. "What's It Gonna Be?", with its abundance of sexual innuendos, became a Number One hit in the U.S., as well as a hit in countries like Canada, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

"Doesn't Really Matter"
Produced and written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Originally from the 2000 soundtrack album "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps"
Also found (in an alternate version) on the 2001 album "All For You"
Released on July 25th, 2000
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #1 (Hot 100--08/26/2000); #3(R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--08/26/2000); #3 (Pop Songs chart--09/09/2000)

JANET became the first artist in history to have Number One hits in the 80s, 90s, and 00s when this single was released. "Doesn't Really Matter" showed a departure from the intensity that was found in "The Velvet Rope" album...the song was light and inviting. I have always loved the breakdown in the middle of the song where the choreography really shines through. For the "All For You" track, "Doesn't Really Matter" featured of the "Dance All Day Extended Mix" of the song as remixed by Rockwilder.

In the beginning of this review, I made mention to my appreciation towards JANET. "The Velvet Rope" was the very first album I ever owned from her. I remember sitting in front of my stereo, literally two inches away from it, to listen to the album from start to finish two or three times a day, DAILY! Even though I had heard of JANET, her music wasn't part of my household..EVER!. I was the one who ventured out to find her "greatest hits" compilation "Design of a Decade", where I learned more about her accomplishments. Of course, I was taken down "memory lane" when I heard the music. Since then, I have bought EVERY JANET album...I have searched long and hard to find B-Sides and remixes to her music...I have analyzed her music videos like it was part of my reason to live in order to learn the choreography on my own...I listened intently to every syllable from every lyric ever sung just so I can feel deeper what it was she was trying to convey through her music.

This is why I say I'm a die-hard JANET fan...and I really do owe everything I've done in my life to her...she truly is an inspiration.

"The Velvet Rope" album ended up becoming one the most thought-provoking albums ever. During the two years prior to the release of the album, JANET suffered from long-term depression. Often times she would "[take] time off during the during the recording of the album or abruptly [leave] the studio during recording sessions". Plenty rumors started to arise over her own sexuality. Songs like "Free Xone" and the remake to Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night" didn't exactly help her case as they contained several references towards homosexuality. The album became the first album to be banned from countries because of its sexually-explicit material ("Rope Burn"). Other singles were released from the album including "You" and "Everytime". During this time, JANET collaborated with other artists such as Shaggy (1998's "Luv Me, Luv Me"), BLACKStreet (1998's "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" along with Eve and Ja-Rule), and Elton John (1999's "I Know the Truth"). "The Velvet Rope" became triple-platinum and yielded two Gold singles ("Together Again" and "I Get Lonely"). JANET would soon reap the benefits of keeping it true to herself on her next release that was a return to the happy and adventurous side of JANET.

FROM the 2001 ALBUM "All For You"
RELEASED on April 24th, 2001
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on ALBUM: #1 (Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart)

"All For You"
Produced and written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Also written by Wayne Garfield, David Romani, and Mauro Malavasi
Released on December 13th, 2000 (radio) and March 13th, 2001 (official single release)
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #1 (Hot 100 and R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--04/14/2001); #1(Pop Songs chart--05/05/2001); #1 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart--5/12/2001); #1 (Radio Songs chart--05/19/2001); #28 (Adult Pop Songs chart)

The first time I heard this song, I was just beyond excited. "All For You" became JANET's tenth Number One on the Hot 100 where it stayed for seven weeks. Unfortunately, it so far has been her last Number One. The song ended up winning several awards, including the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.

"Someone To Call My Lover"
Produced and written by Janet Jackson, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III and Terry Lewis
Also written by Dewey Bunnell
Released on June 26th, 2001
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #3 (Hot 100--09/01/2001); #11 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--09/08/2001); #3 (Pop Songs chart--09/01/2001); #1 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart--08/18/2001); #9 (Radio Songs chart--09/01/2001); #29 (Adult Contemporary Songs chart--09/15/2001); 26 (Adult Pop Songs chart--10/13/2001)

"Someone To Call My Lover" wasn't one of my favorite JANET songs. The So-So Def Remix that followed featuring Jermaine Dupri really irritated me also. What is memorable about this song is its sampling of "Ventura Highway" by America. I will admit it's catchy but "Someone To Call My Lover" never fully impressed me.

Ask anyone from my high school and they will tell you one thing...I was a JANET freak who would break into the "All For You" dance routine at any given moment. Apparently, I had to cut class to get the album when it was released...this I don't remember. The "All For You" album became the FIRST album in her career that didn't yield six singles. "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)" featuring Carly Simon (and Missy Elliott/Diddy on certain remixes) was the only other single released along with "Come On Get Up", which gained airplay here in the States. More controversy arose over this album as it became the first to carry a Parental Advisory Warning because of profanity and sexual content. As a matter of fact, the album was banned from Singapore after the record label refused to remove the track "Would You Mind". "All For You" went double-platinum and held one Gold single ("Doesn't Really Matter").

In my eyes, this is where the tumble in JANET's career begins. She divorced Rene Elizondo, Jr. and later became involved with Jermaine Dupri...someone who didn't do a damn thing for her musically. It also signified a departure from her long-time producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. After the whole Super Bowl issue, the release of JANET's next album suffered a lot of heavy criticism...therefore marking the beginning of a six-year stretch of failed exposure.

FROM the 2004 ALBUM "Damita Jo"
RELEASED on March 30th, 2004
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on ALBUM: #2 (Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart--
04/17/2004)

"All Nite (Don't Stop)"
Co-produced and co-written by Janet Jackson
Also produced by BAG and Arnthor
Also written by James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III, Terry Lewis, Tony "Prof T" Tolbert, Anders Bagge, Arnthor Birgisson, Herbie Hancock, Paul Jackson, and Melvin M. Ragin
Released on May 29th, 2004
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #90 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--07/03/2004); #33 (Pop Songs chart--07/10/2004); #1 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart--0/27/2004)

Another one of my favorite songs of all time, "All Nite (Don't Stop)" didn't do well whatsoever (with the exception of it being a major Dance hit). The song never broke onto the Hot 100 chart...but regardless, the video was definitely one of the most amazing...and yet another that inspired me at one point in my life. JANET received plenty of mixed criticism from the LGBT community for the collaboration she did on the Dancehall Remix to the song with Elephant Man (who was known for making homophobic references in his own music). JANET had already issued an apology for having worked with another artist (Beenie Man; "Feel It Boy") for the same reasons.

This album featured the singles "Just a Little While", "I Want You", and "R&B Junkie" (as a promo). "Damita Jo" (taken from JANET's middle name) impressed me in the slightest bit. It was supposed to have been another "side" of JANET...the more raunchier side, if I'm not mistaken. Songs like "Warmth" and "Moist" ended up winning JANET another Parental Advisory Warning for explicit material...not to mention songs like "Strawberry Bounce" that had a definite presence of profanity. The album did go platinum. "Damita Jo" never became one of my favorite albums...and it wasn't until the next that I felt slightly optimistic about JANET's career...

FROM the 2006 ALBUM "20Y.O"
RELEASED on September 26th, 2006
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on ALBUM: #2 (Billboard 200--10/14/2006); #1 (R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart--10/14/2006); #2 (Digital Albums chart--10/14/2006)

"Call On Me" with Nelly
Co-written and co-produced by Jermaine Dupri, James "LROC" Phillips, James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, III, and Terry Lewis
Also produced by Janet Jackson
Also written by Cornell "Nelly" Haynes, Jr. and Johnta Austin
Released on June 19th, 2006 (radio) and September 5th, 2006 (official single release)
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #25 (Hot 100--08/05/2006); #1 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--09/23/2006); #2 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart--09/30/2006); #19 (Radio Songs chart--09/09/2006)

This song has great memories for me...from the moment it was released to recently when I heard the "Luny Tunes Main Mix" (Reggaeton) to it. "Call On Me" was very different from anything released from "Damita Jo". It kind of took you back to her earlier songs like "Runaway". Regardless, this song wasn't one that called out to many people. As a matter of fact, the song suffered from being played on MTV because of the Super Bowl incident.

"20Y.O." was a celebration of JANET being in the industry (at that point) ...well, for twenty years. Other singles like "So Excited" featuring Khia didn't help elevate the album off the ground. "Enjoy" and "With U" never got the recognition they deserved either. (The former was released in Japan, while the latter never had a music video to accompany its release.) Still with J.D. at the forefront of production, the album simply ended up being average...it did go platinum...but no single carries a certification of any sort. And that's a shame...

FROM the 2008 ALBUM "Discipline"
RELEASED on February 26th, 2008
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on ALBUM: #1 (Billboard 200, R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and Digital Albums chart--03/15/2008)

"Feedback"
Co-written and produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Dernst "D'Mile" Emile
Also written by LaShawn Daniels and Tasleema Yasin
Released on December 29th, 2007
BILLBOARD INFORMATION on SONG: #19 (Hot 100--03/15/2008); #39 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart--02/09/2008); #30 (Pop Songs chart--02/09/2008); #1 (Dance/Club Play Songs chart--03/22/2008); #7 (Digital Songs chart--03/15/2008)

This song has some real great memories for me...none of which need to be shared with the general public. "Feedback" marked the return of JANET after she signed with Universal Music Group's Island Records. The song was accepted by many...and I thought it would've paved the way for the comeback she so rightfully deserved. Unfortunately..that didn't occur...and the remix with Ciara just killed the song altogether...don't people know not to match icons with less-than-capable subjects?

The entire "Discipline" album (from beginning to end) was outstanding. JANET worked with several people including Missy Elliott, Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, and Ne-Yo to make an album that was completely different from anything we've heard from her. The sad part is that Island Records (in association with Def Jam) did not do anything to promote this album...or her tour. Despite releasing three more singles ("Rock With U", "Luv", and "Can't Be Good"), the album only reach Gold status...

From the looks of it, the blame for everything can really be put on Jermaine Dupri...that's just my opinion. His label did absolutely nothing to promote JANET in the slightest bit....so she left...and I don't blame her. Hopefully now that he's not the "love interest" in her life, she'll be able to focus and get her music career to where it should be.

She is releasing "Number Ones" under Universal Music Group's Hip-O Records...and I'm very happy for her. As for her upcoming studio album, she's working with people like Darkchild...here's hoping she teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis since (in reality) her major hits came from when she worked with them.

FROM the G.H. COMPILATION ALBUM "Number Ones"
TO BE RELEASED on NOVEMBER 17th, 2009

"Make Me"
Co-written and produced by Janet Jackson and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins
Also written by Thomas Lumpkins and Michaela Shiloh
Released on September 29th, 2009
Has yet to appear on the Billboard Charts

In lieu of everything that has happened in JANET's personal life, she came back with a single inspired by her brother's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". I love this song...it's fresh and brand new...JANET seems revitalized as she sings the lyrics...almost inspired. Here's hoping this is a sign of good things to come.

So there we go, kiddies! An elaborate review comes to an end. I've done reviews like this for BRITNEY and MADONNA...but neither one touched me as much as this one. And I hope it was able to shed some light on the undeniable ICON that is JANET JACKSON!
