KEM-- "Intimacy: Album III" (RATING 2/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

If last week offered us a new sound that was fresh and unexpected, then it's no surprise that this week brings us music with no character or personality...much like the artists behind the albums. Adult Contemporary R&B is something I've enjoyed for many years of my life. The "grown and sexy" melodies and lyrics found in this genres are the only ones that really call my attention in an industry filled with superficiality and repetitiveness. But nowhere was it written that Adult Contemporary R&B had to be full of snores and disbelief.

I haven't been all too familiar with KEM and his previous albums, which is the reason why I decided to give Intimacy: Album III a try. While the album starts off strong with tracks like When I'm Loving You and Can You Feel It?, by the third track I began to fall asleep. Songs like Love Never Fails and Human Touch have the ability to make me understand the meaning behind them...but it's pretty easily interpretable. THIS means that all the critics who claimed KEM did something spectacular with his lyrics obviously were afraid of embarrassing himself by telling the truth. This artist does not win an award for ground-breaking song-writing on ANY of the tracks offered on this album...he leaves a lot to be desired, really. For an album called Intimacy, for an album whose tracks reach the six-minute mark, you'd think he went out of his way to captivate you for the 45-minute duration of the album. I'm sorry to say that I regret listening to this album...the production is just about as plain as KEM's attempt at "pleasing the ladies" or his paper-thin vocals that are as weak as most of the material on his third attempt.

So what I have learned? Boisterousness doesn't appeal to people like me after awhile. Lady Gaga is a prime example of this; do you think I really care too much about her sophomore album? No...because after over ten songs released and/or played in some format from her debut (and later released Monster EP), I feel as though she has a lot to prove her second time around if she wants to keep MY focus on her. Being flamboyant will never rock my boat...but if you're too tamed and laidback with your music, you will lose me as part of your audience even quicker. Artists have to find a median between the over-extravagance and the lame if they want to make it far nowadays. Lyrics have to be more heartfelt, more deeper than they are already. Production doesn't have to be hyperactive to prove your presence but at least do something to keep people from falling asleep ten seconds after your album starts. And singing ability...YOUR VOCALS, for crying out loud...should actually be existent if you plan on turning heads. Too bad for KEM...he just lost my interest in anything he does from this moment on. Maybe his Adult Contemporary R&B is suitable for a septuagenarian...but for someone who knows the true meaning of "grown and sexy", I plan on spending my money on someone who is actually worth it.

Songs that were MINUTELY ENJOYABLE from Intimacy: Album III:
• Human Touch
• If It's Love featuring Maurissa Rose

DONDRIA-- "Dondria vs. Phatfffat" (RATING 2/5)

Photobucket

As I continue on with my rampage about uninspiring artists, DONDRIA only solidifies my belief that the industry is either desperate to sign random people just to make a quick dollar...or executives might actually be about as foolish as the idea that crossed their minds giving them the illusion they were doing something intelligent. Jermaine Dupri discovered DONDRIA through YouTube a few years ago. Her debut album was delayed for almost two years and now it finally gets to see the light...but I really wish it would've been kept in the dark....

If KEM failed at being "grown and sexy", DONDRIA and her ridiculous nickname TRY too hard to be "grown and sexy". THAT's evident on the track Making Love. She could be an "old-soul" at heart, but nowadays, no 23-year-old is gonna know what it is to "make love" to another human being. Maybe she does, I don't know...but I base my assumption on the fact that the rest of this album caters to the young crowd...the teenage crowd. That's how immature her music sounds to me. And Jermaine Dupri always seems to be a hit-or-miss with production. It seems as if he picks and chooses who he wants to give the better music to, while the rest get some recycle garbage that isn't appealing to anyone. His Jeep Mix for the lead single You're the One (released back in November of '09, mind you) features a sample from the 1976 Bootsy Collins' hit entitled I'd Rather Be With You. However, it's very unfortunate that JD did not have anything better to do with said sample except screw it up completely...and the 50 Cent sample on No More was totally unnecessary.

DONDRIA is an artist who needs better guidance. I could tell she's talented...she does possess a beautiful singing voice, but what turned me off about this album was the production. Yet again, I found myself being very dissatisfied with what was being offered. It's too juvenile for me...and what I thought was a throwback to 90s-style R&B was just a glitch in my hearing because NOTHING on DONDRIA's debut album conjures up the talent of her predecessors. I think she needs to re-evaluate the people she collaborates with in the future because she will need to re-invent herself after the flop of an album that took so long to become available.

Songs only SLIGHTLY ENJOYED from Dondria vs. Phatfffat:
• You're the One
• Shawty Was Up featuring Johnta Austin and Diamond
• Believer
• Kissed By the Sun

From DONDRIA's debut album "Dondria vs. Phatfffat", here's the song "Saving Myself..."

MIKE POSNER-- "31 Minutes to Takeoff" (RATING 5/5)

(This week's FEATURED BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST!)

All of us can admit when we're being "assholes", but only the best of us can admit to it with such swagger and nonchalance. And as MIKE POSNER expresses that he's one after all, it only makes me look up to him as an inspiration. He has a cynical attitude about his demeanor that is highly entertaining...and at the same time, oddly enticing in a way it shouldn't be. It kind of makes me wonder why he didn't break into the industry sooner...

...but we gotta wait for the best in life, right? Well, WELCOME MIKE POSNER and his debut album 31 Minutes to Takeoff. Born in Detroit, the son of a pharmacist and attorney has come a long way from making mixtapes in his Duke University dorm room. His current single Cooler Than Me has peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. I'm almost certain he will have a high debut with this album because of its solidity, interesting sounds, and blunt lyrics that'll speak very highly to anyone who gets a thrill out of being brutally honest to those they come in contact with. It's really all about experiences...whether it be love, infidelity, or pain in life, MIKE POSNER tackles each subject with an air of certainty and confidence that is altogether comical and seductive.

His voice doesn't match anyone else's in the industry right now. For those who'd like to compare him to Justin Timberlake automatically because of gender and race, you are sadly mistaken. While Timberlake's been able to dazzle us with falsettos at a young age, POSNER does the same...but with a spirit that really draws you in to take a closer listen to what he's saying. Songs like Gone In September, Cheated, and Save Your Goodbye may seem a little harsh...but POSNER only speaks the truth in a bold matter that most are afraid to grow accustomed to. His music isn't all about making someone feel worthless, though. Delta 1406 is definitely one of the deeper tracks on the album as he talks about certain aspects in his life, including family. What's of interest to me is that MIKE POSNER dabbled in some of the writing AND production for his album. Now THAT'S a true artist! Every time I write a review, I notice more and more how singers have others do the work for them...not him. He's bringing something new to the forefront and he definitely needs to be recognizde for the awesome work he's done in the past several months.

Critics are already giving this album mixed reviews...calling it "bland" and "unfavorable". I give it a full-score rating. I listen to music on an everyday basis...I listen to music spanning several decades and I can see how the industry's performers are deteriorating slowly in their talent. MIKE POSNER is fresh, in your face, and talented...not only that, he is fully capable of reaching a great status in his career if he's given the chance to prove that he's good at what he does. I definitely recommend this album...and I will consider it at the end of the year when I put together my FAVORITE ALBUMS of 2010 list.

Songs I Truly Enjoyed from 31 Minutes to Takeoff:
• Please Don't Go
• Bow Chicka Wow Wow
• Cooler Than Me (Single Mix)
• Cheated
• Save Your Goodbye
• Synthesizer

(This week's FAILURES)

Does anyone remember the British boy band group 5IVE from back in the day? In the late 90s, these young men hit mainstream success with their huge singles When the Lights Go Out and It's the Things You Do. They went on to release two more albums only to disappear from sight, not only in the U.S., but overseas, as well. They were in direct competition with artists like the BACKSTREET BOYS and *NSYNC, who were already holding the world in their grip with their amazing feat of selling a million albums in first week sales alone...

Now here comes JLS...another boy band Britain...who might not gain the same stardom that have achieved in their homeland. As a matter of fact, in Britain alone their debut album has gone four-times platinum. In Ireland, it has reached two-times platinum. Now they decide to tackle on America with a six-track EP that contains their first three singles overseas, a BRAND NEW single, and two other tracks from the debut album. I'm not really feeling the material at all...the only songs that have gained my interest were the two singles Everybody In Love and One Shot. Everything else sounds WAY TOO DATED and I'm all too certain of there being no niche that JLS can fall into to set them apart from what's already been done. Their image is questionable...to the point where I have to wonder about their personal preference. The borderline homo-eroticism in the group hinders me from actually taking their songs seriously because I'm not exactly sure if they're singing to women or men...may be completely crass to say this but I call it like I see it.

The current single The Club Is Alive is #1 overseas...but really, the track is horrible! I'm not sure who gave them permission to actually record this song...I just really wish they wouldn't have. The melody is awkward...to me, it sounds like some random song I use to sing when I was in kindergarten. But this is what the Brits call talent, right? Well, they could keep JLS...they won't go far here in America unless they get amazing production and better song-writing credits. (Side note...a good portion of the album was written by members of the group...this does not help their cause in any way whatsoever.) Again, catering to a teenage-girl audience will help them greatly because they don't know better. They see pictures of washboard abs and perfectly tanned skin and vaginas start to leak almost immediately making it difficult for them to realize that the music is actually a piece of shit! (By the way, it's called airbrushing...trust me, they're not that hot!) For people who love REAL music, take a listen to this if you want a good laugh...those who are deaf, take a listen and be glad you can't hear what's going on. Either way, JLS failed to impress me with their work...therefore they are latest FAILURES to come out of this review. Sorry Britain...send us over Alexandra Burke before giving us the runners-up from X-Factor...at least this girl knows how to sing. So much for having a boy band group who doesn't have a decent harmony in place!

DRU HILL-- "InDRUpendence Day" (RATING 3/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

The music industry is much like a revolving door. Many artists filter in and out leaving an impression to be remembered. Others can't even get their foot back in the door...especially those who take extended hiatuses. We've already seen Christina Aguilera suffer an embarrassing situation when her much talked-about album flopped immediately after its release...so what makes DRU HILL think they're any different?

Eight years have passed since we last heard of the R&B-group originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Their Dru World Order album earned moderate success when released back in 2002...but it was during this time the group started encountering difficult times as members left to embark on solo careers (most notably Sisqo). Going even deeper than that, the members of DRU HILL seemingly lost sight of what was most important as they quarreled and fought over money issues and the announcement of a member's decision to work on a Gospel music career. Now, Sisqo, Jazz, and Nokio introduce the brand new member named Tao...as well as their fourth album to date entitled InDRUpendence Day. And while Tao adds an interesting voice to the group's original low register, the album remains regrettably unimpressive, to say the least.

DRU HILL doesn't really take it back to the original R&B sound we've been knowing. Instead, they take on a blandly produced list of songs that sounds as if they were leftovers for a DAY 26 album. Shut It Down seriously reminded me of a re-imagined spin on a BACKSTREET BOYS song from their debut album called (If You Want It To Be Good Girl) Get Yourself a Bad Boy slowed down by only a little. Yes...you read that correctly. The album actually sounds like generic pop has been added to the mix as if that was supposed to do something grand. Below Zero is my favorite song from this new album, although I'm pretty sure JAHEIM would've done a better job at it. Tracks that I looked forward to like Makin' Luv and Remain Silent are good...but could be SO much better if there was more emotion put into the song. The lyrics are tediously sung with no inspiration and that's probably because this project wasn't taken as seriously as it should have. Oh...and the remake of the 1985 hit from TEARS for FEARS entitled Everybody Wants to Rule the World was a definite uncalled-for miss...yet again, don't try to put a twist on a classic if you're gonna do it half-assed.

The revolving door will continue to filter out those who have no business being in the music industry and artists should take a mental note of that. They have to strive to be bolder and more aggressive than they were when they released their previous album in order to keep people's attention. But if you're gone for EIGHT YEARS, you should've made it a priority to break THROUGH that door, making an unforgettable statement regarding your return. DRU HILL failed in that aspect. Maybe the fans will feel differently...but I particularly don't see the group being able to make a comeback after this album. I wish it could've been better...but in the end, it ends up receiving an AVERAGE rating for being monotonous. Added to the end of the album are snippets from Nokio's band called BLACK ANGEL DOWN. Very interesting stuff, indeed...as a matter of fact, that may be the only thing on this album that peaked my interest...the very last six minutes of the album.

That's just simply sad.

Songs that I SOMEWHAT enjoyed from INDRUPENDENCE DAY:
• Shut It Down
• She Wants Me
• Whatcha Do
• Remain Silent
• State of Emergency
• Love MD
• Wind (Snippet)
• How Deep Is Your Love (Snippet)
• The End (Snippet)

RICK ROSS-- "Teflon Don" (RATING 1/5)

Photobucket

(This week's FAILURE)

What do Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, and The Washington Post all have in common? Every critic from these highly prestigious publications gave RICK ROSS a favorable rating on his new album...but I bet you any money, these people aren't the types of people that'll drive around blasting his music from their car. I fail to hear the colorful adjectives they mention in their reviews totally...as a matter of fact, Teflon Don gives RICK ROSS The FAILURE label...making him the third artist this year to receive such a low rating from MY review...

Teflon Don's overproduced tracks come across like RICK ROSS was doing anything in his power to impress anything and anyone. After having been sued for apparently stealing his moniker from a drug trafficker , it probably goes without saying that RICK ROSS does not know the definition of the word "original". He is a B-List rapper with A-List aspirations that turn out to be C-List shortcomings. Teflon Don opens with the track I'm Not a Star...CLEARLY! You didn't need to write a whole song about this topic...I already knew it. The atrocity continues on with songs like MC Hammer featuring Gucci Mane. There's no deviation for RICK ROSS as he tries to paint us this imagery that the album is straight from the heart. Superficiality oozes out of the organ in his chest...it's all about the girls, cars, etc., etc. Maybach Music III featuring Jadakiss and Erykah Badu and Aston Martin Music featuring Drake and Chrisette Michele are the only two song I somewhat enjoyed...but it still wasn't enough to make me say RICK ROSS is a gift to the Rap world; he will always be far from it.

All this praise about his flow...and I don't hear it. The lyrics are stupid and not thought-out whatsoever. He doesn't have the cunning knack for creating unbelievable rhymes and bold statements like JAY-Z and EMINEM do. RICK ROSS can only dream about it. Teflon Don is another disastrous attempt at music...and RICK ROSS will just have to suffer the brunt of his inadequacy as a performer. I'll tell you this...in reference to a little comment made during an interview with Billboard...even if I drove a Honda Accord, Teflon Don will NEVER be blasted from my car for as long as I live. It's crass, drowsy, and untalented!

I DID NOT CARE FOR ANY SONGS WHATSOEVER FROM Teflon Don!

PLAN B-- "House of Pleasure" (RATING 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

I wouldn't necessarily say I received "pleasure" from this album...but I will say PLAN B gets a "thumbs-up" in my book for creating a Reggaeton album I completely adored from start to finish. House of Pleasure doesn't sample the same beats over and over again. It doesn't borrow from every possible type of Latin music. It doesn't contain 21 guest appearances either. It's a straight-up throwback to the way Reggaeton used to sound back when it reached in peak several years ago.

House of Pleasure gives us the true sound of Reggaeton while blending some of the more modern sounds that have made for such a distinct departure from the norm. For the first time in a long time, an album came along that didn't have me despising artists that I have looked up to for close to a decade now. Tito "El Bambino", RKM y Ken-Y, De La Ghetto, and more make appearances on this album. Some of the more memorable tracks for me are Lloras. Mis Canciones Hablan De Sexo featuring J-King and Maximan couldn't be any more bolder. Definitely makes me wanna grind up against that special someone. Other songs I enjoyed were Es Un Secreto and the title track for the album.

PLAN B may not really be on many people's radar...but this album should definitely be given a listen. No overuse of Auto-tune or electronic sounds, House of Pleasure was able to break through a long drought for me and this genre. I'm very pleased and I hope that they do well next week as the album debuts on the chart!

Songs I ENJOYED from House of Pleasure:
• Tarde En La Noche
• Porque Te Demoras?
• La Nena de Papa featuring Tito "El Bambino"
• Si No Le Contesto
• El Amor No Existe
• Nos Fuimos Discoteca
• Parisera featuring De La Ghetto
• Que Me Paso
• House of Pleasure

JOSH GROBAN (September 2010) With numerous awards under his belt and a voice known around the world, Josh Groban is preparing fans for a brand new album. What makes this project so important and different from the others he’s done are the production credits. In a move sure to spark controversy, Grammy award winner Rick Rubin will be executive producing Josh’s entire album. Groban appears to be parting ways with David Foster, the former EP for all of his prior releases. Rubin (a past Beastie Boys member) is now co-head of Columbia Records, as well as being co-founder of the Def Jam record label alongside Russell Simmons back in the day. His production is well known and highly regarded within the industry, having worked with such big name acts as U2, Green Day, Johnny Cash, Jay-Z and Shakira. Rick Rubin also won a Grammy for producer of the year for work with The Dixie Chicks. So what does all this mean for fans of Groban? Well for one, expect a slightly different, perhaps modern sound. Yet for those who fear Josh may be traveling too far out of his comfort zone, James Newton Howard, famed orchestrator and music producer is also heavily involved. Howard is an industry veteran and prominent film score composer, having composed for some of Hollywood's biggest hits like Pretty Woman, I am Legend and The Dark Knight. Josh’s new album will also feature plenty of the trademark live orchestration that has filled his projects in the past. With an exciting new sound and inspired collaborators, expect Josh Groban to tweak his pop-opera formula and have another platinum album on his hands. Those not familiar with Groban’s work will have a new reason to become interested as Josh’s acting resume has grown considerably recently. After a successful turn as ‘himself’ this season on the FOX hit ‘Glee’, Josh has just joined Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei, and Steve Carell in Warner Brother's new comedy about marital crisis due next year. The next several months should be quite busy for Groban with his label giving his new project a considerable marketing push.

JAZMINE SULLIVAN (August 2010) In 2008, Missy Elliott protégé Jazmine Sullivan took the industry by storm with her honest lyrics and Lauryn Hill/Erykah Badu vibe. Currently, Sullivan has been hard at work at her follow-up, hoping to avoid the sales slump usually associated with sophomore albums. Given the pedigree of this project, success is almost guaranteed. Salaam Remi, who produced Sullivan's mega-hit ‘Bust Your Windows’ is involved, as are Ryan Leslie, StarGate, Carlos “Los Da Mystro” McKinney, Lamb, and Ne-Yo. Several song titles have been made public over the past few months by Jazmine’s label in order to build interest and placate fans who’ve been rabid over information regarding this anticipated release. Scheduled to appear on the album are: ‘You Get on My Nerves’, ‘Vanity Six’, and ‘Blow’. Expect more of the brash R&B sound that made Jazmine Sullivan famous on her debut, to be present on this new album which as of right now does not have an official title. ‘Holding You Down’ will be Jazmine’s first single off the new project. It is produced by Missy Elliott and will be released in late June.

NE-YO (September 2010) Following up on the platinum-plus-selling success that was ‘Year of the Gentleman’, Ne-Yo brings music fans his latest offering ‘Libra Scale’(an ode to the singer/songwriter’s zodiac sign). The new album may be due in the fall, but Ne-Yo and his label are already hard at work on promotion. The first official single, ‘Beautiful Monster’ made its debut last month on Myspace and has since been sent to various outlets like iTunes and Amazon for download. Much of the album itself is shrouded in secrecy with only minute details having emerged from Ne-Yo himself. Here’s what we know so far: Libra will build on the formula that Gentleman introduced. The new first single is already garnering attention for its similarity to number one smash ‘Closer’. Ne-Yo again trades in the trademark urban rhythmic sound for a dance/pop style, which many originally considered risky and what now seems to be the norm with artists like Kelly Rowland and Usher embracing the same styles in a post Lady Gaga world. Also known is that ‘Libra Scale’ will feature production from longtime Ne-Yo collaborators StarGate, who’ve worked their magic on ‘Beautiful Monster’. Discussing the track recently, Ne-Yo revealed he has written a movie script based on the album. He’s quoted as saying: "The song embodies a portion of a story that the music on the album is inspired by. "The beautiful monster is in fact our love interest/arch nemesis - her name is Domini in the film," the songwriter continued. "It may not make a whole lot of sense right this second, but once you see the videos and the forthcoming film it will all meld together." "My new album is a series of songs inspired by the script that I wrote, but it's not a musical." Ne-Yo delves further into the album by giving fans this tease; "The underlying question is about your moral fiber. Is love, money and fame more important to you? The movie [and album] is really me and my friends answering that question." Movies have been at the forefront of Ne-Yo’s career lately as the multiple Grammy winner has several high profile releases coming soon to theaters. Those include the Tuskegee Airmen story ‘Red Tails’ opposite Terrance Howard, the sci-fi action flick, ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ due next year, and the drama ‘4Chosen’ with Laurence Fishburne. Needless to say, Ne-Yo’s been quite the busy man lately and it looks like his hard work will surely pay off.

T.I. (August 2010) ‘King Uncaged’--the title pretty much says it all. For fans worried that jail time would force multi-platinum selling rapper T.I. into seclusion, think again. As his current promo single proclaims, T.I. is BACK! This new album promises to be fierce, to the point, and full of bravado. Production is being handled by an all-star lineup which includes, DJ Toomp, The-Dream, RedOne, TrackSlayerz, Swizz Beatz, Danja, and Jim Jonsin. T.I.’s albums have become known for unique and inspired collaborations and this new project will be no different. T.I.’s last effort yielded collabos from Jay-Z and Kanye, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake. So far confirmed for ‘King Uncaged’ are The-Dream, B.O.B., Trey Songz, and Lady Gaga. Yes you just read that correctly, T.I. will have Lady Gaga on his album courtesy of a track produced by longtime Gaga collaborator RedOne. Also appearing on the new single, ‘Got Your Back’ is Keri Hilson. A video is expected soon for that track. Another song, ‘Yeah Ya Know’ is being sent to club DJ’s and urban radio in a effort to cover all bases and have songs out that appeal to different fans and markets. ‘Yeah Ya Know’ was originally recorded for T.I.’s upcoming film Takers (due Aug. 20th), and is expected to be on that movie’s soundtrack album as well. With well over 70 songs recorded, narrowing down the final tracklist for ‘King Uncaged’ will prove quite the task for T.I. and his team. Expect an album filled with an aggressive T.I. who goes hard on tracks and tackles topics like love, life, his recent prison sentence, haters who got in the way, and how he’s grown has a person and artist. Expectations are high for this one, but if anyone can deliver a quality product it’s Tip. With ‘I am Back’ garnering such a huge reception from fans and radio, this new album will be a summer blockbuster for sure.

NICKI MINAJ (September 2010) Lil Wayne protégé and the female representation for Young Money Entertainment is FINALLY releasing her studio debut later this year. While details on this album have been slim, the first two singles released give fans a taste of what to expect. Official first single ‘Massive Attack’ featuring Sean Garrett has all but failed at U.S. radio with its intricate and hard to digest beat and over the top video. More recently ‘Your Love’ was chosen as the second single with hopes that it will achieve the radio play that seemed to escape ‘Massive Attack’. The Annie Lennox sample and drum loop beats appear to help make this song a bigger hit. An official remix of the song featuring Flo Rida, is expected to appear next month. With Nicki continuously stating that she will not rush the release of her debut, it would surprise no one if this album didn’t seen the light of day in September as Universal/Motown and Young Money execs hope. Recently, Nicki announced via Twitter that she was going for a clean start on this album after being unhappy with some of the material which has already been recorded. Industry analysis are assuming the slow reception at radio for Massive may have something to do with this decision, especially if the other tracks slated for the album sounded similar to that one. One thing is clear and undeniable and that’s Nicki’s talent. As long as she stays true to herself and lets her personality shine through in her music, she will do quite well in the long run. Fans itching to hear Minaj, need only listen to the half dozen singles she’s currently featured on including: ‘My Chick Bad’ (Ludacris), ‘Lil Freak’ (Usher), ‘Shakin it For Daddy’ (Robin Thicke), ‘Up Out My Face’ (Mariah Carey), and ‘Woohoo’ (Christina Aguilera). Nicki will also appear on label mate Drake’s debut later this month on the song ‘Up All Night’. Currently, the only person aside from Sean Garrett slated to appear on Minaj’s still untitled album is Bad Boy artist Cassie. Here’s hoping Nicki calls in favors from some of her A-list peeps to help her out with collabos. Nicki Minaj’s distinctive musical flare, eye-popping style, and sexy image will no doubt propel her to the top and bring her closer to her influences of Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill and ultimately help her to achieve their success.

AVENTURA (Fall 2010) After sweeping the recent Billboard Awards with nine wins and coming off their most successful tour (four sold out shows at MSG!) while breaking chart and album sales records, it’s safe to assume Bronx’s natives Aventura are having a great year! The bachata group is at a crossroads in their career coming off their most successful and critically acclaimed album ‘The Last’. The guys have something special planned for fans this year with their first greatest hits compilation due this fall. The set according to the group, will allow fans to familiarize themselves with Aventura’s earlier albums and songs, since the band’s popularity has been on the rise over the last five years, yet they’ve been around for ten. When asked if the album will feature new material, lead singer/songwriter Anthony ‘Romeo’ Santos smiled and said stay tuned. Aventura’s last compilation album 2006’s ‘K.O.B. Live’, featured live recordings of some of the group’s bigger hits, as well as five new tracks--three of which became unexpected massive singles (‘Los Infieles’, ‘Mi Corazoncito’, and ‘El Perdedor’). This new set is sure to please fans both new and old. Those looking for brand new material from the group will have to wait until mid-2011 when the first of their several solo projects will appear. Each member will be releasing his own solo album about which not much is known. Bass player Max is expected to release a hip-hop album, while guitarist Lenny is working on an R&B/hip-hop sound for his project. No information has been released in terms of what Henry and Romeo are both working on. Fearing that solo work will lead the band to splitting up, the group has already signed a contract to their label for one more album after the solo projects appear, so contrary to rumor, ‘The Last’ was not the last album from this extremely popular and immensely talented group. The industry is littered with groups who went solo and then quickly flamed out, yet for every failed attempt there are enormous success stories. Aventura’s talent will keep them in the limelight and their dedication to fans will keep them a success.

I guess you must really need to be into industrial music if you expect to find this project relevant in the least bit. M.I.A. may only be recognizable to Americans with the song Paper Planes, which was a huge dance hit back in 2008...more so later on because the song was sampled on Jay-Z's and T.I.'s Swagga Like Us featuring Lil Wayne and Kanye West earning them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group...not to mention a nomination for Best Rap Song of the Year. Internationally, this Sri Lankan-British performer is well known for singles like Galang, Boys, and Sunshowers. Unfortunately, the only "real" thing M.I.A. is bringing to the table with her latest album is more weirdness and graphic controversy.

The gruesome video to the lead single from MAYA (stylized as /\/\/\Y/\) entitled Born Free conquers a very unwelcome subject when it comes to music...politics. As a matter of fact, the entire album has a centralized theme of "information politics" as expressed by M.I.A. herself. To me, that's not the reason why I dislike the album...if we can recall a few months ago, NAS and DAMIEN MARLEY, JR. made an album of the same sort and I heavily praised it. This "industrial" sound that even M.I.A. describes as "schizophrenic" just seems a little over the top. It's very difficult to digest and it left me scrambling to fast forward through the album because of the pain it was causing my ears. Coming from someone who allegedly received death threats against her and her son because of comments she made towards search engine Google, M.I.A.'s boldness doesn't necessarily put her at the top...it makes her more vulnerable. The only tracks I enjoyed were XXXO and It Iz What It Iz, with the exception of two others...NOT because she did anything special...but because they were actually easier to listen to than anything else on the album.

It seems artists conjure up thoughts in their minds of being "untouchable" by the time they begin recording their third album. I see it all the time...and M.I.A. (whose middle name is actually MAYA...in case you were wondering where the album title comes from) is no different. It's too bad for her...here in the United States, a lot of people aren't going to be open to that type of harsh music. I may not speak for the United Kingdom or where ever else...but M.I.A. needs to come back with something a little bit less crazy if she wants to catch the attention of radio once again.

IVY QUEEN-- "Drama Queen" (RATING 3/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

My interest in Reggaeton is getting closer to truly disappearing...and IVY QUEEN isn't even the reason why. Truthfully speaking, her seventh studio album entitled Drama Queen, an introspective project from the Queen of Reggaeton herself, helped me not to totally give up on the style of music I have been nothing but bad-mouthing since I starting writing these reviews over a year ago. IVY QUEEN has always been the "female bad-ass" amongst this predominately male music genre. She has given us no-bullshit attitude and warnings on songs like Cuentale, Quiero Bailar, and Tuya Soy...which I will forever hold close to my heart. With Drama Queen, IVY QUEEN somewhat abandons that persona...which leaves me yearning for something more.

In my eyes, this album isn't a strong comeback. Never mind the collaborations with Franco "El Gorila", De La Ghetto, Wisin y Yandel, and Frank Reyes. The songs really don't evoke any response out of me...they just come across as boring. I Do is a huge deal to most because it is mainly performed in English instead of Spanish. MY issue with the song is that they Auto-tuned the hell out of her voice making IVY QUEEN sound absolutely ridiculous and off-key. Jungle featuring Franco "El Gorila" is an eccentric spaz-attack if there ever was one. The one song that truly speaks to me is De La Calle featuring De La Ghetto and that is because its mellow beat is unlike anything I've ever heard from IVY QUEEN. Everything else on the album was simply okay...mediocre is probably the more appropriate term to use if I'm being quite honest.

I always have to step with trepidation when reviewing albums in this genre...I haven't really said anything good about ANY artist simply because nothing changes. IVY QUEEN probably would've gotten a higher rating had she stuck to what I EXPECTED from her. I don't take away anything from her...I know she was trying to do something different...and to MANY, it will be greatly appreciated. With me, however, it's gonna take a lot more than some personal words to make me believe that anything related to Reggaeton actually has some sort of verifiable substance.

Songs that I Enjoyed from Drama Queen:
• Te Voy a Recordar
• Me Quiere
• Amor Puro
• Acercate featuring Wisin y Yandel
• La Vida Es Asi (Reggaeton and Bachata Versions)
• Cosas de La Vida featuring Frank Reyes

PAUL WALL-- "Heart of a Champion" (RATING 0/5)

(The LATEST FAILURE added to this REVIEW!)

Does anyone remember what song PAUL WALL is most recognized for? I didn't know the answer to this question either simply because he has no name for himself in the Rap world...but it turns out that the annoying single Girl from his 2005 debut album The People's Champ was the most successful as it was the only single ever released that peaked the highest on the Billboard Charts. Everything else thereafter was nothing but a joke and didn't do anything to help solidify PAUL WALL as a reputable artist...

He receives the label of FAILURE when it comes to the BABYBOICAMPBELLS REVIEW! Yes it is true...PAUL WALL is the second artist this year to get that awful name from me...but he earned it outright with his latest dismal offering called Heart of a Champion. He simply didn't cut it this time around...and I'm not hearing any buzz whatsoever about this album anyways. Heart of a Champion was mainly produced by Travis Barker...clearly, because it wasn't the sounds that turned me off about the album. It's a the lame lyrical flow that comes out of PAUL WALL's mouth. I mean...you tell me what you expect from tired-out song titles like I'm On Patron, Stay Iced Out, Pockets Fulla Presidents, and Smoke Everyday!? It's all been said and done before...by actual Rap veterans who know what's up! And another thing, collaborating with the industry's B- and C-List hip-hop artists like Chamillionaire, Lil' Keke, and others doesn't make for a groundbreaking album...it just proves to PAUL WALL couldn't get any elite performers to contribute their talent.

The only song I found somewhat passable on Heart of a Champion was the opening track Take Notes...not because it was anything special...it was because it's the only track that actually catches my attention...in the least bit, anyways. I wouldn't recommend that anyone wastes money on this album. There are a lot more buzz-worthy Hip-Hop/Rap albums coming our way...let PAUL WALL get a wake-up call when his latest effort fails miserably just like he has. Maybe then he'll get the hint that no one really cares about his career any more...

I DID NOT CARE FOR ANY SONG WHATSOEVER FROM Heart of a Champion!!

CHRISTINA AGUILERA-- "Bionic" (RATING 3/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

CHRISTINA AGUILERA has held a grip on her audience for so many years. A decade of hits and over 42 million albums sold worldwide has proven that she is incomparable to any of her competition. At the forefront of re-invention, AGUILERA has brought an array of music over the years ranging from cutesy pop to delectable R&B...and then on to an homage of throwback sounds that wasn't expected. Now she tackles a different style of music. With BIONIC, AGUILERA incorporates dark electronica with some noticeable grunge, deep ballads, and in-your-face rock. Slap on a "parental advisory warning" for explicit content and you got one of the most eclectic albums out this year. Unfortunately, AGUILERA crossed the line into a territory of simply doing WAY too much for her comeback album.

I had been wondering how an album that features work from M.I.A., Santigold, Linda Perry, The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, and Polow Da Don would sound...now I'm just disappointed. The hodgepodge of melodies do not blend correctly causing BIONIC to have no musical structure whatsoever. Her voice is there...but for much of the album, it is digitally hidden behind all the mechanical processing that was done in the finished product. I don't like to draw comparisons...but it's really hard NOT to when I hear songs that are ALL to similar from other artists. I'm not talking about Madonna or Lady Gaga...I'm talking about Desnudate sounding like a Spanglish version of Britney Spears' Get Naked (I Got a Plan), as well as Bobblehead sounding like Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl. There are several songs I enjoy on the album...ironically it's the ballads and rock-flavored songs that catch my attention MORE than whatever "new sound" she was trying to create. I Am and All I Need are exactly the type of songs AGUILERA needs to get back into making...even the provocative Sex for Breakfast is a welcome change from the hot mess that is BIONIC.

I can applaud people for taking risks...that's what life is all about. But in the music industry, taking such risks can prove to be catastrophic to your career. AGUILERA has waited four years to unveil an album during the reign of Lady Gaga who continues to epically command the charts AND the attention of everyone around her. X-TINA may need to re-conjure the formula she used with her Stripped album because with BIONIC...she's only gonna continue to push away her long-time fans. The numbers don't lie...current single Woohoo featuring Nicki Minaj officially dropped out of the Hot 100 this week after debuting at #79 while Not Myself Tonight has dramatically dropped from it's somewhat decent debut on the charts at #23 to #95! That's embarrassing for an artist of her caliber. Let's hope that AGUILERA can at least debut high now that her album was released...because otherwise, BIONIC will be her first flop!

SONGS that I ENJOYED from BIONIC:
• Bionic
• Not Myself Tonight
• Woohoo featuring Nicki Minaj
• Prima Donna
• Lift Me Up
• I Am
• You Lost Me
• I Hate Boys
• My Girls featuring Peaches
• Birds of Prey (Bonus Track)

TRAVIE McCOY-- "Lazarus" (RATING 5/5)

(One of this week's FEATURED ARTISTS!)

It may not have been a CD I would've rushed out to get in the past but TRAVIE McCOY gets the label of Featured Artist for a reason...he is the one American-side artist that released an album of pure genius this week and I have to give him credit for it. We all know Travie (or Travis) McCoy as being the lead vocalist of the band GYM CLASS HEROES. He brings us his debut solo album LAZARUS at a proper time when everyone else seemed to fail miserably at their own projects. McCOY's album is filled with joyful rhythms and fun lyrics...the perfect soundtrack for an adventurous Summer.

The one thing I like about LAZARUS is that it really brings to light how talented and versatile McCOY is. His music is all about partying and reminiscing on the good times that have been had. After Midnight talks about "becoming alive" once the clock hits 12am. That sense of raucousness is also present on the track Superbad [11:34]. The one song that really took me back is Akidagain. Joining in on the chorus is a group of children singing along to a song that perfectly describes how it feels to miss your childhood. Those moments of innocence that seem so far gone now that we've become adults and have taken on so many responsibilities is vividly painted on this amazing track. McCOY also talks about some serious topics...for all the lovers who've been done wrong in the past, the final track to the album entitled Don't Pretend featuring Colin Munroe is may just bring to memory some of the pain and hardships we've gone through with past "love interests". Tim Williams, Bruno Mars, T-Pain, and Young Cash also appear as guests on three tracks that bring LAZARUS complete appeal and wonder.

Lyrically and production-wise, TRAVIE McCOY struck gold with his idea to embark on a solo project. However, this does NOT mean that GYM CLASS HEROES has split up. As a matter of fact, there is an album rumored to have an upcoming release in 2011 tentatively named The Papercut Chronicles II. Until then, as an audience, we do have to embrace TRAVIE McCOY for doing his own thing...and doing it the RIGHT way. One too many times I've witnessed artists doing "solo" work only to bomb on their way out into the spotlight. I'll be heavily anticipating to see how well he does with LAZARUS on the charts...because if any of the other people mentioned in this review debut higher, I will be extremely disappointed more than what I am with the industry already!

SONGS that I COMPLETELY ENJOYED from LAZARUS:
• Dr. Feel Good featuring Cee Lo Green
• Billionaire featuring Bruno Mars
• Need You
• Critical featuring Tim Williams
• We'll Be Alright
• The Manual featuring T-Pain and Young Cash
• Don't Pretend featuring Colin Munroe

PLIES-- "Goon Affiliated" (RATING 0/5)

(This week's FAILURE!)

I'm gonna try to make this review very simple for those who actually liked this album...I sincerely believe those of you who find this to be high quality of music are basically unintelligent and probably have no reason to be on this Earth. I'm not surprised to know that Algernod Lanier Washington a.k.a. PLIES dropped out of college his sophomore year...then again, with a fucked-up name like his, it's safe to say that his parents weren't entirely smart either. Giving birth to this week's FAILURE was surely a mistake...he may get his money...but as a person, I find it incredibly hard to believe that he is the opposite of what his music depicts.

Irresponsible, incomprehensible, and ignorant are just a few words I can use to describe the atrocious and diabolically crude work that PLIES has put out this week! Goon Affiliated is about as tired as the repeated hint rappers throw out that claim them to have huge penises. And what exactly does it mean to be Goon Affiliated? What the Hell is a 'goon'? Is it some sort of slang to give forth the image that you're a thug and that you're hard and that no one can fuck with you? Nigga, please...!

I sat listening to a total of twenty tracks of nothing but pure bullshit...and I can brutally say that PLIES has no talent at all. There are so many other rappers out there who can flow but they don't get the time of day. PLIES, on the other hand, gets airplay despite the fact that he carries no sort of eloquence or swagger like T.I. or Jay-Z. The only song that I would listen to is Medicine...and that's ONLY because Keri Hilson appears on the track. Everything else is absolute garbage to me. Songs like Goonette, even though I see the meaning PLIES is trying to convey, just seems to degrade a woman's worth. Or is this another form of "Hood Love" I'm failing to see? Good Dick is about an infinitesimally impressive as what I'm pretty sure PLIES carries in between his legs.

The bluntness of this review won't be the last you see. The beauty about doing music reviews as a hobby is that I get to be as crass as I want to without being told that I have to lighten up. Take it for what it is...I'm vocal about everything...and music sure as Hell no different! Don't buy this album unless you're uneducated and failed out of the second grade twice...it really won't get you know where and probably will make your I.Q. drop significantly in the process.

I DID NOT ENJOY ANY SONG from GOON AFFILIATED!

LIL JON-- "Crunk Rock" (RATING 4/5)

(One of this week's FEATURED ARTISTS)

I retract all of my previous statements and feeling towards this album. When you hear the title Crunk Rock, what do you think of? I thought this was gonna be a spin-off to Lil' Wayne's Rebirth album. Instead, it is a party album unlike any other I've heard from LIL' JON. What Pitbull tried to do with Rebelution, LIL JON does it ten times better. I am completely blown away and I have to admit there were several times I had to get up and dance while trying to write this review!

The album starts off with a remix to Throw It Up which didn't really do much for me. For me, Crunk Rock kicks off once the song On De Grind featuring Stephen and Damian Marley begins. What thrills me about this album is the high-energy production behind it...most of which was done by LIL JON himself. I may not condone the lyricism behind the album...but these are the types of song that when you hear them in the club, the last thing one will care about is the meaning behind the words in the song! Like a Stripper featuring Pleasure P and Shawty Putt is my FAVORITE song from the entire album, alongside Moist...a sexy R&B track featuring Oobie. What a Night featuring Claude Kelly has David Guetta written all over it...I even had to go back and say that I liked the song Shots featuring LMFAO which I previously disliked when their album came out last year.

A lot of critics are giving this album a poor rating...but you know what? LIL JON has become one of several candidates for "Best Album of the Year" in MY review because he switched it up unexpectedly for an awesome result...to be honest with you, what LIL JON did before annoyed me beyond comprehension...but CRUNK ROCK definitely has a place on my iPod and in the clubs for what it is. For those of you wanna get "crunk", I highly advise you to get this album!

JUAN LUIS GUERRA-- "A Son De Guerra" (RATING 4/5)

I learn about different music every day of my life...and I can't be more fulfilled with the knowledge I gain. JUAN LUIS GUERRA is another artist on my list of people I wasn't entirely too familiar with. Thanks to my Babyboi (who continues to expose me to new things in the music world), I decided to tackle writing this review on this legend's newest album A Son de Guerra. I'm, yet again, very happy that I did.

For those who know this performer's style of music, you'll be happy to hear that it hasn't been drastically changed in an effort to "Wow!" the audience with something new. He sticks to what he knows and does it well...especially on the blending of different genres. This is an album that doesn't adhere to one style of Latin music. Instead, you'll find a perfect blend of bachata, merengue, bolero, jazz, and salsa from beginning to end. Juanes appears on a track worthy enough of being a #1 hit entitled La Calle. Speaking of #1s, this track immediately became one of my favorites without knowing about it having already spent three consecutive weeks atop the charts. Bachata en Fukuoka has that noticeable amount of beautiful rhythms and emotions I look for in a song. Other songs of great worth are Lola's Mambo featuring Chris Botti and Mi Bendicion.

As time passes, I will become more familiar with the artists that matter the most. JUAN LUIS GUERRA will continue to be on my radar from now on after listening to A Son de Guerra. I really don't see him having any trouble at all debuting at the top of the Latin charts next week when the Soundscan numbers come in.

SONGS I TRULY ENJOYED from A SON DE GUERRA:
• No Aparecen
• La Guagua
• Apaga y Vamonos
• Son Al Rey
• Cayo Arena
• Arregla Los Papeles
• Lola's Mambo featuring Chris Botti
• Caribbean Blues

TAIO CRUZ-- "Rokstarr" (RATING 2/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

I definitely needed a snooze button for this review. It's pretty ironic that I would say this considering that this album is nothing but high-energy dance cuts that will cater to the tween audience of America...but for those who want a "grown-up" taste in music, I extend my apologies to you right now. Britain's own TAIO CRUZ should've stayed overseas...it doesn't matter to me that he hit #1 with his breakout American-side debut Break Your Heart featuring Ludacris because of the simple fact that his sound is outdated. Why hasn't anyone learned to leave the electronica/hip-hop sound to artists like Akon? This is a trend that needs to be broken up quickly...I'm already boycotting the industry in the sense that I'm not wasting money on amateurish garbage that keeps getting spewed out to audiences who crave something with a little more substance.

Putting a derivative on the phrase "rock star" doesn't make you a genius or a rebel...it makes me not want to take you seriously as an artist because I already know that what you have to offer is nothing but nonsense. (And I really don't feel like adding words to my "spell check" dictionary because someone thought they were cute!) Rokstarr is completely unimaginative...for the sake of this review, I did cycle through the album to find tracks that I enjoyed...which ended up being the more ballad-driven rhythms from the entire project. Having Ke$ha talk about taking a Dirty Picture doesn't give you credibility...it just brings a god-awful stench and unintelligence to a song that's already the wrong type of sensory overload because of the meaning behind it. I will say that TAIO CRUZ created cuts of which I felt the deeper meaning to...but even those songs about losing someone and yearning for them afterwards fail to bring anything new to the table. The lyrics are all the same...and it doesn't impress me at all. Fabolous appears on the remix to Dirty Picture...wrong move, son...enough said. Everything else in between is lackluster, at best.

TAIO CRUZ isn't someone who I believe can come from overseas and "WOW!" the audiences for a long time. Give him, at the most, ONE more album and he'll be gone. Leave the real Rokstarr...ahem, ROCK STAR...name to those who are more deserving!

SONGS that I MINUTELY ENJOYED from ROKSTARR:

LA INDIA-- "Unica" (RATING 5/5)

(This week's FEATURED ARTIST)

Being from a household that didn't embrace Salsa music from the moment I was born kind of left me with a longing to learn more about this beautiful style of music. While I was all wrapped up in the whole Reggaeton phenomenon that doesn't exist anymore, it should've been TRUE Tropical music that made me feel much closer to my roots. No other music in this world can make you FEEL passion and emotion like Salsa does. And 2010 seems to be the year where all the LATIN artists are making a comeback to show everyone that they have longevity and REAL talent.

LA INDIA is one of those artists. She is now the ONLY female artist to have the most #1 hits on the Tropical Songs chart when Estupida became the SEVENTH cut in her catalog to reach the top. Unica is fresh...it's a force...and it's exactly what we've all been waiting for. The album starts off with a remake of a Nat King Cole classic called Smile...this song actually dates back to 1936 when it was first created by composer Charlie Chaplin. If you research this song, you'll see how amazing that is for this lady to re-do this song with a Tropical sound...unbelievable stuff! LA INDIA decided to record songs in both English and Spanish instead of having an album dedicated solely to one language. Turn Off the Lights and Si El Te Habla De Mi are very powerful...both romantic and bold alike. She's another whose voice hasn't left the building like others we know so well. It's still there and it takes commands of songs like Te Vas Arrepentir and Amor Secreto.

For someone who has dealt with a lot in her personal life (I got this little history lesson from my Babyboi, by the way), it's great to see that LA INDIA is still at it. No one can compare to her...and I can see her gaining a lot of recognition and accolades for this album of perfection. Truly spectacular work!

SONGS that I COMPLETELY ENJOYED from UNICA:
• Smile
• Estupida (Salsa AND Ballad Versions)
• Si Estoy Loca
• Crying
• Ni Fines De Semana Ni Dias Festivas
• Triste

(This week's FEATURED ARTIST)

Songs belonging to this era have suffered drastically in the production department...but even more so within the lyrics. I don't hear about passionately loving anyone any more...all there is "false love" dedicated to relationships that will only last for two weeks because all people care about these days is sex and nothing more. I no longer hear about the intensity of emotions when losing someone you cared about so much...it's as if those feelings were only there for the meanwhile, only to be erased when the "next best thing" came along. With the exception of songwriters like Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson, and Mariah Carey, NO ONE has been making the effort to write about things that MATTER like those who have come before us. NO ONE has been brave enough to explore human needs and tendencies like the original masterminds who paved the way for the artists we see before us today...and MARC ANTHONY has realized that.

MARC ANTHONY, who is an icon in his own right, has brought back to life some of the most hauntingly profound music of decades ago in his eleventh studio album. The aptly-named Iconos is a tribute to artists like José José, José Luis Perales, Juan Gabriel, Roberto Carlos, and La Mafia who were brave enough to push boundaries many years ago with songs like El Triste, Te Lo Pido Por Favor, and Ya Lo Se Que Tu Te Vas. MARC ANTHONY's powerful voice commands attention over lusciously produced live instrumentation...something we ALL know we don't hear enough of today. The opening dark track Almohada clears the way for a satisfying work of art by one of the leading LATIN artists of this time. Two previously unreleased tracks (A Quien Quiere Mentirle and Maldita Sea Mi Suerte) also appear on this album...the latter of which has become one of my favorite MARC ANTHONY tracks of all time!

Iconos can't be compared to anything within the Latin genre of music. I know most people may not enjoy Spanish ballads (I used to be one of them), but much credit is to be given on this amazing feat. MARC ANTHONY knows what it is to be a true artist. He's reveled in giving us some of the best Salsa music ever...and for those who want to know, he will be releasing a Salsa album, as well as an English-language album, later on this year. So everyone will get their fix, regardless. For right now though, let's sit back and enjoy REAL music...because once it comes, it may be years before it ever comes back. Definitely a must-have for old and new fans alike!

RIHANNA-- "Rated R: Remixed" (RATING 3/5)

Photobucket

So what makes a good remix to a song? I've always enjoyed LONGER club remixes, especially those who have a straightforward trance element as opposed to house or anything else. Just a preference...but when is it too much? Back when I used to go out of my way to buy import singles that contained hard-to-find remixes of the hottest songs, I would be easily pleased with what I found. Now...it really seems as even remixes are falling off and just becoming way repetitive and too boring.

Chew Fu, a New York remixer and producer, is the mastermind behind RIHANNA's remixed version of her megahit album Rated R. For the most part, his remixes work well enough to get you dancing in the clubs...but I found myself wondering what in the hell he was thinking when he got into the lab to work on the newer versions of her songs. Take Hard (...Granite Fix) for instance...I have a HUGE issue with people who take a song just to STRETCH out the vocals of the performer, making them sound completely ridiculous. He does it quite a few times, including on the Can't Wait No More Fix to Wait Your Turn. The album actually becomes too predictable as the same sounds and beats get transferred over to every song. On the Guns in the Air Fix to the song G4L, the track starts off catchy and anticipatory...building up suspense as the intro goes in full force...but as soon as the beat drops, it sounds as like an 80s car-racing video game suffering from Turrets Syndrome. Definitely hard to listen to. There are good points to the CD including the Molotov Fix to Fire Bomb and the Small Room Fix to Stupid Love...Chew Fu did a great job of taking slow- and mid-tempo cuts and turning them into danceable tracks that aren't flamboyantly overdone...like what most are used to when it comes to this type of music.

Rated R was one of the hardest albums of 2009. This remixed version of the album does strip away the literal rage that RIHANNA was trying to portray by incorporating gyrating beats that are sure to get people thrusting on the dance floor. It was a decent effort by the legendary remixer who has done cuts for Kanye West, Lady Gaga, and others...but I'd rather take the original version of the album. It's much more profound...and much less annoying...to listen to.

Oh...and the intro cut Madhouse wasn't turned into a full-length song...instead it's just a mechanical version of the already-out-of-place interlude that opened up the album in the first place.

SONGS that I thought were ALRIGHT from RATED R: REMIXED:
• Rockstar 101 featuring Slash (Teacher's Pet Fix)
• Photographs featuring will.i.am (35mm Fix)
• Rude Boy (Vitamin S Fix)
• G4L (Guns in the Air Fix)
