USHER-- "Raymond vs. Raymond" (Rating 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

Finally...the album we have all been waiting for is here. With so much hype, controversy, and speculation centered around USHER's recent life, everyone seemingly couldn't keep their comments to themselves in regards to this album and the meaning behind it...including myself. I was one of few who thoroughly enjoyed Here I Stand because it was a departure from the normal sound of an USHER album...you know, the sex-driven, menage-a-trois having, whorish factor that became a staple of this man's career since the very beginning. I was also one who felt that USHER needed a new direction since many of his singles sounded exactly the same. Things have changed...

Raymond vs. Raymond, USHER's sixth studio release, cannot be compared to the mega-success that was Confessions...it is ten times better! And that means a lot coming from me because I never really cared for this artist in the least bit. The lead "buzz" single Papers had me in a fit ready to totally disregard this album when it came out and I'm glad I didn't. Even though Hey Daddy (Daddy's Home) peaked my interest somewhat, it wasn't until Lil' Freak featuring Nicki Minaj and There Goes My Baby were released that I became thoroughly impressed. And while I feel one's personal life (and another's strife) shouldn't be made public, I really can't dismiss the accomplishment that is Raymond vs. Raymond. Attention has to be given right away to the songs produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Pro Lover and Mars vs. Venus are completely amazing...whereas So Many Girls and Guilty featuring T.I. create a mood of confidence so strong, it can't be denied. Okay and Making Love (Into the Night) are also favorites of mine. One definite surprise is the track OMG featuring will.i.am because of its ambient sound. USHER combined the influences of The Runners, Jim Jonsin, Rico Love, Polow Da Don, Danja, RedOne, and many others to create a breakthrough in R&B today.

Raymond vs. Raymond is edgier and deeper than anything else USHER has put out over the years. Profanity is in abundance...sexual innuendos are at an all-time high...but what's more profound is the effort and soul put into the project. Could this album make it to Number One? Quite possibly...we'll just have to wait and see what happens...but I will say this. USHER was able to make me do an about-face in his direction...imagine what he's gonna do for the rest of his audience...

Songs that I Really Enjoyed from Raymond vs. Raymond:
• Hey Daddy (Daddy's Home)
• There Goes My Baby
• Lil' Freak featuring Nicki Minaj
• She Don't Know featuring Ludacris
• OMG featuring will.i.am
• Foolin' Around
• Okay'
• Making Love (Into the Night)

ERYKAH BADU-- "New Amerykah Part Two: The Return of the Ankh" (Rating 3/5)

Keeping things under wrap better signify that you have something out of this world in your hands...because if it turns out not to be, it will totally upset and disappoint a lot of people. That's the case for me when it comes to ERYKAH BADU's newest album. Long ago were the days of the undeniable soul that was Next Lifetime and Other Side of the Game. Instead, we have something psychedelic...something retro...and I'm not quite sure if it works.

While I like every song on the album, New Amerykah Part Two: The Return of the Ankh didn't "WOW" me like I thought it would. I guess maybe because I heard that BADU was trying to return to her roots and it didn't exactly sound like that...or maybe it's just an extension of what she's already done and I haven't caught on to it. Either way, the album is simply average to me. There are highlights for me and they come on the songs Gone Baby, Don't Be Long and Umm, Hmm. Other than that, the rest of the album probably wouldn't get much play if I were to upload it onto my iPod. For someone else, this might be the next best thing...and that's okay. The lead single Window Seat and its music video has sparked up a lot of conversation seeing that BADU strips down naked. If it isn't that, it's the symbolism behind everything that makes for a bit of controversy and she's seen walking naked towards the intersection where Kennedy was assassinated many years ago.

Overall, the thrill factor isn't there regardless of what BADU does. If she were to come out with an album close to what she released back in the late 90s-early 00s, I may be inclined to give it a listen. But until that happens, I'll just stick to my belief that BADU has to call Tyrone her damn self because she's not gonna be going anywhere anytime soon.

Songs that I Somewhat Enjoyed from New Amerykah Part Two: The Return of the Ankh:
• 20 Feet Tall
• Window Seat
• Agitation
• Love
• You Loving Me (Session)
• Out My Mind, Just In Time

MONICA-- "Still Standing" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

So many disagreements can occur between an artist and their record label making the release of an album almost difficult to achieve. MONICA is one of many artists putting out new music this year that have been out of the limelight for a long time...and while we all wait in anticipation for what she's about to reveal...some people may be disappointed...and some may not even remember who she is.

After having recorded countless songs for the album in the length of two years, Still Standing is complete after MONICA took a hiatus from the industry for four years. What I hear people say is the most dissatisfying element of the album is the fact that it only contains ten songs...especially to those who adamantly followed the BET reality series Monica: Still Standing, which chronicled the making of the album itself. I truly enjoyed the album...and it is a definite return to what MONICA is originally known for. Some, however, believe that Still Standing sounds dated...that it's already been done. This album follows the pattern for the new wave of Contemporary R&B music...and I don't see anything wrong whatsoever. As a matter of fact, it might be her greatest effort since her 1998 album The Boy Is Mine.

Being in love makes a huge difference when I write these reviews...and that's what I immediately look for. Songs that are powerful and beautiful...a true testimony to the love that few people are lucky to ever experience. Towards the end of the album...the final three songs became my immediate favorites and perfect examples of what I'm trying convey. Superman, Love All Over Me, and Believing In Me have become some of my favorite songs ever from MONICA. Teaming up with producers like Missy Elliott, Jim Jonsin, Bryan Michael-Cox, Ne-Yo, and others really did make for a fresh sound for MONICA. Some of my other favorites include Mirror and If You Were My Man...as well as the original title track of the album entitled Lessons Learned which depicts a topic I have encountered one too many times before.

In the end, I would recommend getting Still Standing. MONICA still has a voice...and this album is a reminder of that. It may not be the "ghetto hood" sound of 2006's The Makings of Me ...but it is an album that took a lot of completion...and the result isn't near disappointing as everyone makes it out to be. Then again, that's just me...let's see what happens next week on the charts. I guess everyone's a critic in their own right, huh?

Songs I Enjoyed from Still Standing:
• Still Standing featuring Ludacris
• One In a Lifetime
• Stay Or Go
• Everything To Me
• If You Were My Man
• Mirror
• Here I Am

From MONICA's latest album "Still Standing", here's the song "Believing In Me..."

JUSTIN BIEBER-- "My World 2.0" (Rating 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

When JUSTIN BIEBER came out with his seven-track debut album My World a few months ago, I was quick to dismiss him. I wasn't impressed and I didn't see what the Hell everyone was making a big deal about. THEN I found out that he was releasing a second "installment" of his debut album and soon enough the lead single Baby featuring Ludacris appeared on the radio. I still may not care about this little boy and whatever it is he releases...but I will admit that My World 2.0 isn't so much filled with the adolescent views of a fifteen-year old little kid who doesn't know what life is really about...it's actually slightly mature.

My World 2.0 comes as a shock to me because I related to some of the songs...not completely...but still enough to realize that this kid has some potential. And I won't deny that. The production value is MUCH more appealing than what was released prior to this album. The ballads are on point and offer some very adult views on matters of love and not giving a care about anything else. I'll also give him props for co-writing ALL the tracks on the album...that's impressive since established artists somehow forgot the concept of a pen and a pad. But, of course, one track has to be atrocious to me...and that is the collaboration with Sean Kingston called Eenie Meenie. Took me back to kindergarten for a second when I heard the line "...catch a bad chick by her toe..." Really? And Sean Kingston should begin to realize already that he has no credibility anymore as a relevant artist. Other than that, Up and That Should Be Me standout a lot because of the content and sound...especially the latter track where JUSTIN BIEBER elevates his vocals to a place where I haven't heard them at before.

I may be unwilling to get caught up in a "tween" phenomenon...but I will give credit where it is deserved. JUSTIN BIEBER is on a good path to having a fruitful music career...and I can't wait to see where he goes when he grows up a little bit more.

Songs that I Enjoyed from My World 2.0:
• Baby featuring Ludacris
• Somebody to Love
• U Smile
• Runaway Love
• Overboard featuring Jessica Jerrell

ANGEL Y KHRIZ-- "Da Take Over" (Rating 2/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

So this is what we can expect from a Reggaeton album nowadays...a little bit of fake "gangster rap", some uninspired bolero rhythms...and the ever-so played out electronic wave of nuisance. That's exactly what ANGEL Y KHRIZ have conjured up. Oh...and throw in some American hip-hop artists for some attempted good measure and you have Da Take Over.

ANGEL y KHRIZ have come a long way since Ven Bailalo...but I've said it before and I'll say it again...this is a genre that is too repetitive and commercialized. I haven't bought a Reggaeton album since 2008 and it's with good cause. Nothing appeals to me anymore. And these guys right here have never been on my radar. Da Take Over it's just another album added to the list of failed attempts over the years. The aforementioned paragraph describes perfectly what this album contains...music dedicated to a younger generation who know nothing about the roots of Reggaeton and Latin Hip-Hop. (...'Cause if I'm right, a lot of people who have been longtime fans of the music feel the same way I do.) Songs like Sin Vergüenza and No Hacen Na' are your classic wanna-be thug anthems that'll be blasted out of damaged cars this Summer. I will say that songs like No Vale La Pena and Mal Negocio (Ya No) bring a little refreshing sound to the album as they break away from the norm...but just for a little bit. And it isn't enough to make up for the fact that everyone...much like in American hip-hop...has to appear on everyone's track. Flo Rida appears on the single Subelo (Turn It Up) ...okay...great...still didn't do shit to impress me. Other collaborators include J-King, Maximan, and others...all of which will most likely NOT go far in the industry since this is the first time MANY are hearing about them. Oh... and the bachata/merengue blend featured on the track Me Enamore doesn't work quite right...especially since it doesn't sound as if live instruments are being used.

Sorry ANGEL Y KHRIZ...but this album didn't just cut it for me. I highly anticipate DADDY YANKEE's new album and another album from WISIN y YANDEL...as well as IVY QUEEN's new album. If these three artists fail with the new releases...I will never again review an album from this genre. Reggaeton reached its peak during 2004-2005...and no one is currently doing anything to revive it. Is it safe to say the flame on this much-appreciated genre of the past is slowly dying out? I'll guess we'll see...

Songs that I Somewhat Enjoyed from Da Take Over:
• Ella Quiere (Que He He)
• Ayer La Vi
• Sin Verguenza featuring J-King and Maximan
• Me Enamore
• Dime
• Que Hay Que Hacer?

MARC ANTHONY (May 2010) It’s been six years since Marc Anthony’s last original studio album. That effort ‘Amar Sin Mentiras,’ won Anthony a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. More recently, Marc released his second greatest hits compilation, ‘Sigo Siendo Yo’ and the soundtrack to ‘El Cantante’ which featured remakes of Hector Lavoe classics. 2010 will finally see Marc returning to the airwaves with new music after a long hiatus. Not content to just create one album, rumors persists that Anthony is currently prepping THREE projects for release this year! The first of those projects will be a new Spanish pop album available sometime in late spring. While details remain slim, sources at Anthony’s label say the album is a collection of covers that pays homage to some of Marc's favorite Latin singers. Produced in collaboration with Julio Reyes (who worked on Marc’s last Spanish pop album ‘Amar Sin Mentiras’), the album will include songs popularized by the likes of José Luis Perales, Juan Gabriel, and José José. After the Spanish pop album is released, plans are to have a new traditional salsa album ready for late summer. It is not clear, however, if said salsa album will be made up of remakes from the pop album ala what was done for Marc’s ‘Valió La Pena’ (which was a re-recording done in salsa of the pop tracks from ‘Amar Sin Mentiras’) or if the salsa album will feature all new original offerings. Also speculated to appear later in the year (fall perhaps), is a new English album. Rumored to feature production from Kenneth “Babyface” Edmunds, the album is said to be a mature adult-contemporary collection of R&B and pop which showcases Anthony’s glorious vocals to full effect. Currently, Marc can be heard on the just released Cypress Hill single ‘Armada Latina’ which also features Pitbull and is garnering praise for its inspired and eclectic sound. Regardless of how many albums he releases this year, the news that Marc Anthony is back is sure to please fans that have waited so long to hear fresh material from this timeless talent.

NELLY FURTADO (June 2010) After a successful foray into the Spanish music scene with her last album, Nelly Furtado is ready to return to her pop roots. Nelly’s new English album is due this summer and will see her returning to the pop style of her debut ‘Whoa, Nelly!’ while flexing the effervescent cool she picked up on the multiplatinum selling ‘Loose’. This new album will be funky, with the majority of production being handled by Timbaland (the person responsible for much of the beats on ‘Loose’). Nelly will also be working with popular writer/producer Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. This marks the first time the two have worked together, and Tedder is noteworthy for his work with female artists such as Leona Lewis, Beyoncé, and Kelly Clarkson. Fans are eagerly awaiting what both Timbaland and Tedder will bring to the table for Nelly’s latest project. Nelly is also negotiating to have British electro-pop duo La Roux (love me some ‘Bulletproof’!) appear on her new album as well. Thus far, Nelly’s latest seems to have all the makings of a hit. Summer 2010 will be a hot one for sure, with Furtado taking over the airwaves and dance clubs once again. Preceding the album will be Nelly’s brand new single which is expected to drop in May.

JOHN LEGEND (Fall 2010) Looking to shake things up musically, John Legend has big plans for his next album. Tentatively titled ‘Wake Up Sessions’, Legend announced the new album will be a collaboration with Grammy Award winning hip-hop band The Roots. With each album he’s released, John Legend has perfected his craft and taken risks so as not to be pigeonholed as the ‘piano playing soul-man’. His last release ‘Evolver’ certainly showed a new side of himself and this new album looks to be no different. Information regarding ‘Wake Up Sessions’ is being kept under wraps for now, but fans should expect strong production and lyrics, which have become hallmarks of Legend’s career. Keeping busy before the album’s release later this year, John recently wrote the song ‘Shine’ for the documentary ‘Waiting for Superman’. ‘Waiting…’ just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by Paramount Pictures for distribution. The documentary is an investigation of the crisis in U.S. public education, as told through the stories of several students, their families, and educators who are trying to find solutions to restore the dysfunctional system. Legend stated he was so inspired by what he saw that when an offer was made for him to write, there was no way he could refuse. Legend has also recorded a new collabo with Rick Ross for his upcoming album ‘Teflon Don’; the two collaborated on Ross’ last album on the single 'Magnificent'. Also in the works is a duet with Fantasia scheduled to appear on her highly anticipated new album this spring. Numerous collaborations aside, John Legend has always been a name synonymous with quality music. The teaming of Legend with The Roots is inspired, as each side offers something to the other. Given their pedigree and past success, The Roots and John Legend might want to begin making room in their trophy case for the Grammy their new album will certainly receive.

Photobucket

CIARA (Summer 2010) Seeking to distance herself from the sales disappointment that was her last album, Ciara is putting the finishing touches on a new album with hopes to have it in stores this summer. Executive produced by hit-making duo Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, Cici’s latest album is expected to have more substance than her previous work. The goal here is to reconnect with fans and engage them the way she did with ‘Goodies’ her debut, and records like ‘Promise’ which were quite successful for her. Ciara’s faced a ton of new competition in her segment, with people like Keri Hilson and Keyshia Cole vying for attention from the record buying public and succeeding quite exceptionally. Her new album will feature the up-tempo style of songs which gained Ciara fame initially. Producers on the album include Darkchild, Justin Timberlake, and Bangladesh (who previously worked with Ciara in 2004 on the track ‘Hotline’). To prep fans for her return to the charts, Ciara will be featured on the upcoming album from Ludacris, ‘Battle of the Sexes’. A new single is expected to drop in late spring before Ciara’s album is released in mid-summer. Competition may be fierce, but Ciara has already proven she is more than up to the challenge.

LIL JON (June 2010) It’s been quite some time since we last heard from the self-proclaimed ‘King of Crunk’. Mired in legal issues and the bankruptcy of his former label TVT, Jon has found a new home over at Universal Republic, and is FINALLY ready to release the long gestating ‘Crunk Rock’. To say the album will be a blend of styles is almost an understatement. Much like his last album, the platinum selling ‘Crunk Juice’, Jon’s new album will feature something for everyone. From R&B and hip-hop, to pop, reggae, Brazilian rhythms, crunk, and of course as the title implies, rock. One thing is certain; the bass-heavy sound Lil Jon is known for will be featured prominently. Over the last few months several buzz tracks have seen release. The electrified ‘Outta Your Mind’ with LMFAO, hypnotic sounding ‘Machuka’ which features Brazil's Mulher Filé and Mr. Catra, the new strip-club anthem ‘Pop Dat Pu**y’ and the current promo single, ‘Give It All U Got’ produced by RedOne. Jon’s projects have always been known for their numerous collaborations and this new album will be no different. While a final track list has yet to be set, artists confirmed to appear on ‘Crunk Rock’ include: R. Kelly, Mario, David Guetta, Snoop Dogg, Elephant Man, Pastor Troy, Ying Yang Twins, Akon, Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, 3OH!3, Gucci Mane, Pitbull and siblings Damian and Stephen Marley, who guest on ‘On the Grind.’ Jon’s first official single from the album, ‘Miss Chocolate’ featuring R. Kelly and Mario, will be sent to urban radio later this month. Next month a single featuring Dr. Luke and 3OH!3 will be sent to pop radio in advance of the album’s June 8th release. While many release dates have come and gone, hopefully ‘Crunk Rock’ will finally be able to make this current one. Regardless, Lil Jon’s crazy music and out going personality will always remain a fixture in the club scene, it will just be interesting to see if he makes his mark on the charts as well.

MAROON 5 (Spring 2010) While rumors persist this may be their last album before disbanding, Maroon 5 are finally ready to release the follow-up to 2007's ‘It Won't Be Soon Before Long.’ Maroon 5 headed to Switzerland to record with producer Mutt Lange for their new album. Lange is a pop-rock mastermind who’s produced blockbuster albums for acts like Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, Shania Twain, and Foreigner. Despite rumors of Lange's quirkiness, the band says that a great sound was created by working with the famed producer. Fans can expect a new collection of songs that sound more organic, almost closer to Maroon’s first album than their last. Each member’s distinct personality will be showcased to full effect on this new project. A small college tour occurred late last year in order to build anticipation for the band’s new release. During the tour, several titles of new songs were made public, including: ‘I'm Never Gonna Leave This Bed’, ‘Wasted Years’, and ‘Don't Know Much About That’. With fan anticipation building rapidly, Maroon 5 will have quite a lot to live up to with this new album. Their last album saw collaborations with Rihanna and even Mary J. Blige (on the ‘Wake Up Call Remix’); no word on whether new collaborations are in the works—although rumored studio time with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks is unconfirmed. One thing is certain; fans can expect more of their provocative and explicit music videos, as this has become a trademark of the band. While a final track list has yet to be set, the latest album from these soulful pop-rockers is on schedule for a late April release.

GORILLAZ-- "Plastic Beach" (Rating 4/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

Innovation may work for some artists...but only if they use it correctly. We've all seen (or heard) performers switch up their styles for something totally out of left field...and for the most part, they make it work. Others leave fans wondering, "What the Hell were they thinking?" GORILLAZ falls somewhere between both ends of the spectrum. Plastic Beach, the latest effort from this "virtual band", has some really interesting points, especially when it comes down to collaborations done with live orchestras. Unfortunately, there were a few songs that I personally didn't enjoy because they were all over the map sonically.

Created by Damon Albarn of the Britpop band Blur, GORILLAZ exploded onto the scene in 2001 with the eponymous debut album which spawned the single Clint Eastwood. It was then that the music industry (at least in America) saw something totally different and refreshing. Four years later the sophomore album Demon Days was released featuring the Top Twenty hit Feel Good, Inc. Two amazing songs, and plenty more, have gone on to reach higher status on charts worldwide. So now what does GORILLAZ have in store for us?

I mentioned earlier live orchestration...well, Plastic Beach contains track which feature the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, as well as The Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music (Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach, White Flag, and Sweepstakes, respectively). Absolutely amazing...I've always been a stickler for Middle Eastern music and string and brass instruments...and these songs don't fail my appetite for things Classical. With this album, you will get a melting pot of guest appearances from artists like Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, and others. The melodies found in songs like Rhinestone Eyes, Glitter Freeze featuring Mark E. Smith, and Empire Ants featuring Little Dragon are truly mesmerizing...but when it comes to songs like To Binge featuring Little Dragon and Some Kind of Nature featuring Lou Reed, I have to honestly skip ahead. These songs are so spasmodic it actually becomes increasingly difficult to listen because there doesn't seem to be a definitive score for the song...the melodies are (for a lack of a better word) schizophrenic.

Regardless, I still enjoyed the Plastic Beach for what it is. GORILLAZ have always made music that made me smile...doesn't necessarily mean that I have to like every single track. Fans and those interested alike won't be disappointed.

Song that I Enjoyed from Plastic Beach:
• Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach featuring Snoop Dogg and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
• Stylo featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack
• Superfast Jellyfish featuring Gruff Rhys and De La Soul
• Broken
• Pirate Jet

(This week's FEATURED ARTIST)

Anyone can call themselves a rapper...at least anyone who believes they could flow like the best ones out there. When reality hits home, we're left with those who are actually talented. Yes, we know about JAY-Z...how can't we? Every time we turn around, he's there. We keep hearing about Drake and how he's going to blow the minds off of everyone with his upcoming album Thank Me Later. And then there's Kanye West...the mastermind whose future project has already been labeled the "greatest hip-hop album of the past ten years." But what about LUDACRIS? The way I see it, people are concerned about what new hot track is out at the moment...and when the next track comes out that sends the chickenheads to the dance floor, they quickly forget about the previous song that made their "hot-ass" side come out tenfold! I say this because we need to stop talking about Blueprint III and Lil' Wayne's newly-appointed year in prison and give acknowledgement to other artists that deserve it.

Longevity is the word that comes to mind when it comes to Hip-Hop...and yes, while we get to constantly hear twenty tracks in constant radio rotation featuring the same artists over and over again, we also get to hear the latest music from one of the hottest rappers in the game. LUDACRIS' seventh studio album Battle of the Sexes has been a longtime coming...and I am beyond impressed by it. In my opinion, it can easily be one of the best albums he's recorded in his entire career. The album was originally set to be released last year as a duo with label-mate Shawnna. Unfortunately, she decided to leave Disturbing tha Peace to sign on with Nappy Boy Entertainment. Battle of the Sexes later became a solo project by LUDACRIS featuring a huge list of collaborators, including Ne-Yo, Monica, Flo Rida, Trey Songz, Eve, Trina, and more.

The production value of this album is quite entertaining...hit-makers like The Neptunes, Bangladesh, and Swizz Beats put forth effort alongside Kajun, Khao, T-Minus, and others to make an album that is undeniably sexy and thought-provoking all at once. You'll of course get the dose of club bangers...but you'll also receive some very serious moments with some of the songs. One song that comes to mind is B.O.T.S. Radio featuring I-20 and Shawnna (yes, she still does make several appearances on the album). The song takes on the form of a skit as various "callers" hit up the local radio station complaining about the wrongs that either a man or woman can do. Definitely revealing...and above anything else, completely true to what's going on with people today. Some of the more sexier moments LUDACRIS has to offer comes with songs like Sex Room featuring Trey Songz. Multiple times better than Splash Waterfalls, you can tell that LUDACRIS wants nothing but to pleasure all the ladies in every way possible. Another provocative track is Feelin' So Sexy featuring Shawnna...I'm pretty sure we all love that late night erotic phone call from someone that is in heavy need of some sexual healing. (I mean, if you a ho, that's different...I always speak from a relationship standpoint!)

Battle of the Sexes also takes on other deep topics like being with someone who above everything that could possibly go wrong...you, in the end, can't get away from them... (Can't Live With You featuring Monica) ...as well as learning the art of confiding in another person... (Tell Me a Secret featuring Ne-Yo). The album will have two versions (much like every other album being released). The DELUXE VERSION will include the remix to How Low featuring Ciara and Pitbull, as well as the bonus track Rollercoaster featuring Dru Hill and Shawnna.

LUDACRIS has a masterpiece on his hands...and I will definitely keep that in mind when it's time for me to compile my Top Favorite Albums of 2010. In the meanwhile, pick up this album...I guarantee you won't be disappointed. LUDACRIS is already on tour to promote Battle of the Sexes, so make sure you visit ticketmaster.com for information on when the tour will hit your town! (Oh yeah, there's a rumor that the sequel to LUDACRIS' 2008 album Theatre of the Mind will be released sometime this year...it's tentatively being called Ludaversal...make sure to keep an eye on that as well!)

LIFEHOUSE-- "Smoke & Mirrors" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

With the exception of Sade, the new year for music officially starts today with the release of FOUR albums that caught me by complete surprise...starting with LIFEHOUSE. I first heard of this Malibu-based Alternative Rock band while watching the very first season of the WB hit series Smallville where the song Everything was used in the pilot AND season finale episodes. The band has enjoyed complete success since their debut album No Name Face was released a decade ago. They've seen their singles hit #1 here in the U.S. (Hanging By a Moment and You and Me) and are ready to release their fifth studio album entitled Smoke & Mirrors.

What immediately caught my attention while reading about this new album was some of the collaborators who infused their talent with lead singer/songwriter Jason Wade. Kevin Rudolf shares writing credits with him on the track Falling In...and Chris Daughtry appears singing back-up on the song Had Enough, of which he also co-wrote with Wade alongside Richard Marx. Smoke & Mirrors really grabbed a hold on me when I reached the songs Here Tomorrow Gone Today and In Your Skin. If you read my reviews on a regular basis, you should know that I enjoy music that have profound lyrics that I can relate to...and these songs are a perfect example. By Your Side is a beautiful track inspired by the faith that can be instilled in you by someone in your life...whether it be your lover or your friend or family member...while the track Nerve Damage is a must-hear song because of its production and symbolism.

Smoke & Mirrors (along with the other three albums I'm reviewing today) received the highest rating I can give to an album. Reasons include high quality of substance...the album isn't filled with nonsense...its powerful lyrics are proof of that alone. I think anyone who isn't a fan of LIFEHOUSE won't find themselves being disappointed. If you're in the mood to hear good Alternative Rock music...check this album out. Keep in mind that Smoke & Mirrors will have a STANDARD and DELUXE VERSION and I do make further mention of that towards the end of this review!

SONGS that I REALLY ENJOYED from SMOKE & MIRRORS:
• All In
• Nerve Damage
• Had Enough featuring Chris Daughtry

RAHEEM DeVAUGHN-- "The Love & War MasterPeace" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

(One of this week's FEATURED ARTISTS)

This could very well be one of the best R&B/Neo-Soul albums being released this year...it may be too early to tell...but what could honestly top what RAHEEM DeVAUGHN has come up with? Twenty songs combined with seven interludes over two discs equals a true hypnotizing and psychedelic experience that only DeVAUGHN himself can give to his audience. This project speaks about the troubles in the world...about love, commitment, and struggle...and about finding out who you are deep down inside.

DeVAUGHN titled his latest effort The Love & War MasterPeace "because I feel that where I am as a person and where we are as a people, we are all trying to master that internal peace and happiness in a very strange time." That makes complete sense to me...I mean, when you hear this album, it really does narrow in on some very touchy subjects. The lead single Bulletproof featuring Ludacris is proof of that. What really hits home are the tracks Soldier Story, Revelations 2010 featuring Damian Marley, and Nobody Wins a War...which contains a HUGE list of collaborators including Jill Scott, Bilal, Anthony Hamilton, Algebra, Chrisette Michele, Shelby Johnson, Ledisi, Citizen Cope, Dwele, Chico DeBarge, and Rudy Currence. Other guest appearances include Wale (The Greatness), Malik Yusif (Fragile), Bun B (Wing & A Prayer), and Phil Ade' (Lose Control).

DeVAUGHN doesn't disappoint those who have enjoyed the sultriness in his music. Some of my favorite tracks include B.O.B. and Calling Me. Bedroom, Microphone, and Hopeless Romantic are also enjoyable...but it's the tracks I Don't Care and Black & Blue that really describe how I feel towards being in a relationship...especially the one I'm in right now. DeVAUGHN has a way of making incredible "bedroom music" without having to defile the art of love-making like most other artists do (i.e., R, Kelly, Trey Songz, Pretty Ricky [I hope you're happy I mentioned them], etc.)

I am very pleased with this album...and even though I don't have money to spend, I most likely will be buying the DELUXE VERSION of The Love & War MasterPeace. Keep that in mind if you decide to purchase the album...I mentioned earlier that it contains a total of 27 tracks...that's only if you buy the DELUXE VERSION...trust me, it is definitely WORTH it.

SONGS that I ABSOLUTELY 100% LOVED from THE LOVE & WAR MASTERPEACE:
• Bulletproof featuring Ludacris
• The Greatness featuring Wale
• I Don't Care
• Mr. Right
• Fragile featuring Malik Yusif
• My Wife
• Bedroom
• Microphone
• Garden of Love
• Nobody Wins a War featuring Jill Scott, Bilal, Anthony Hamilton, Algebra, Chrisette Michele, Shelby Johnson, Ledisi, Citizen Cope, Dwele, Chico DeBarge, and Rudy Currence
• Revelations 2010 featuring Damian Marley
• Wing & A Prayer featuring Bun B (DV)
• Super Hero (DV)
• Hopeless Romantic (DV)
• Lose Control featuring Phil Ade' (DV)
• XOXO (DV)

From RAHEEM DeVAUGHN's new album, here's the song "Black & Blue..."

JASON DERULO's self-titled DEBUT ALBUM (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

I believe it to be completely true what my blogging partner (and love of my life) said about JASON DERÜLO...he is definitely set to be Chris Brown's replacement. At first, I didn't like the lead single Whatcha Say because it reminded me of every other "Hood Pop" -sounding song I've disliked so far. It wasn't until the second single In My Head was released that I gained interest in knowing more about what DERÜLO's debut album was going to sound like. Even though there are only nine tracks...all of them are staples of how successful this young man is going to become.

Born to Haitian parents, DERÜLO (whose last name is actually spelled Desrouleaux...same pronunciation) had always been active in the arts ever since he was a little kid. He has written and produced music for several artists before settling down to work on his debut. The lead single became a #1 hit...while his second peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The songs on the album don't all carry the current sound that is contemporary R&B music. Songs like What If and Encore show how versatile DERÜLO can be with his music, whereas Blind really shows his vocal capabilities. One track that's a standout to me is Strobelight ...a song that carries a high-energy dance sound similar to Brown's Forever but TEN TIMES BETTER! (Strobelight is only available on the UK Version of this album.)

DERÜLO hit a high rating from me because he is really talented and the album is an amazing effort for him. I'm really glad to see someone else taking over that way we can all put to rest the atrocity that was...well, you know. He's already gone on tour with Lady Gaga to promote his album...and I'm already anticipating to hear what future work he may have for other artists...as well as himself.

SONGS that I ENJOYED from JASON DERÜLO:
• Whatcha Say
• Ridin' Solo
• In My Head
• The Sky's the Limit
• Love Hangover
• Fallen

From JASON DERULO's self-titled debut album (UK VERSION), here's the song "Strobelight..."

HUEY DUNBAR-- "Huey Dunbar IV" (Rating 5/5)

Photobucket

Photobucket

(One of this week's FEATURED ARTISTS)

This album is easily one of the most anticipated in the genre of Salsa in a long time. After having his fans waiting for seven years, HUEY DUNBAR returns with his third solo album entitled HUEY DUNBAR IV. DUNBAR has always been an inspiration to me ever since I came across him in 1999...two years after his former group DLG released the album Swing On. That album defined a very special moment in my life...I used to try to sing like him (that was interesting) and it propelled me to want to hear more about him...so I went on a DLG rampage! Upon his announcement to go on as a solo artist in 2000, I became even more interested to see what DUNBAR could come up with. Even though his debut solo album Yo Si Me Enamore was decent...it didn't carry the same effect as his previous work. Once Music For My People was released in 2003, I kind of gave up hope that DUNBAR would reap anything good from leaving the group that gave him amazing success with songs like La Quiero a Morir, Juliana, and Volvere.

It wasn't until June of 2009 that I saw DUNBAR perform for the first time in my life during Chicago's Puerto Rican Festival. It was there that I learned about him planning a release of a new album. My Babyboi followed up on the project and officially announced the date...and today is the day we see DUNBAR make a triumphant return to what he does best...SALSA! Previous albums haven't been as powerful as HUEY DUNBAR IV. This album is very special to me...and really does put this amazing vocalist back on the throne where he belongs. The lead single Te Amare was brought to my attention several weeks ago and I still can't get enough of it. Amarte is another song that can be used to describe being with someone that you absolutely love. Asi Es and Tu Luz are also personal favorites of mine. Another great thing about this album is that the arrangement of instruments that are staples of this beautiful style of music are all live...making for an absolute perfect journey. And, of course, DUNBAR's out-of-this-world vocals are still intact.

I've been reading that we are about to be pleased by several other Salsa albums from artists we love like La India and Marc Anthony...but let me just say that I am personally happy to hear about DUNBAR taking the lead. Can't wait to see what else he has in store for us...!

SONGS that I TRULY ENJOYED from HUEY DUNBAR IV:
• Te Amare
• Ayudame
• Mi Deseo
• Alimenta Mi Alma
• Puedo Existir
• Llegar
• Si Tu Me Amas

(Unfortunately at this time, no music clips or video from the album is available on the Internet to display here.)
